Last week, a 47-year-old man stormed into a law firm in Chinas Wuhan city and shot dead a lawyer who he had some disputes with, according to Chinese state media. He then stuffed his gun, just under 20 inches (50 centimeters) long, into a tennis racket bag and left.
The fatal shooting shocked many in China, which has some of the worlds strictest gun control laws so much so, that some people thought initial reports were about yet another American shooting.
When my friend told me about the shooting, I thought it was the United States, one person wrote on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. Another user wrote, Using a gun to kill people in China? Am I watching an American movie?
That disbelief widely reflects how rare gun crime is in China in contrast to it being a daily reality in the US.

If folks would look objectively at things there are lessons to be learned from most places where humans live.

On edit, maybe I misunderstood your point?

(2,679 posts)The reports findings confirm wide-scale evidence of mass arbitrary detentions, family separations, torture, and religious persecution and it concludes that Chinese authorities may have committed crimes against humanity.

(14,342 posts)should've known you would take China's side.
In your world, China can do no wrong, but the US is always wrong with regards to China.

(14,342 posts)what other "attributes" about China's policies do you think are better that the United States?
No freedom of the Press?
No freedom of Speech?
No freedom of Religion?
How about no 4th or 5th Amendment?
I'd really like to know.

(21,040 posts)That gun control would look to China as a model.
There is an acceptance of authoritarianism in the movement. Some freedoms in addition to te RKBA may be sacrificed; that is simply a price to be paid in order to feel safe. The experience of the Uyghurs is just another cost for the greater good.

(21,040 posts)Societies are different. You cannot divorce one from the other.
China enforces its laws with draconian penalties and few personal freedoms. One in China can reasonably assume they are being monitored at all times.
When the US was created after the revolution, the founders decided against creating a new tyranny. They instead wrote a Constitution for a fairly open and free (with some noteworthy flaws) society. The trend over the years has been towards more freedom and participation.
China on the other hand chose differently. They took what is honestly the more typical path. The former revolutionaries found they had few objections to autocracy, when they were the autocrats. They created a closed, highly controlled society. Occasionally lip service is paid towards freedoms but Tiananmen Square demonstrates what happens if the people actually try to use their freedoms.
