Surprise shooter acted in self-defense during home attack, police say

Story

Surprise police have determined the responding shooter at a house where three were killed and four were severely injured acted in self-defense when 46-year-old Jason Hunt was killed.

Police now consider the man who fired the first shot on July 3, who police identified as Hunt, to be the sole suspect in the case given “the evidence collected to this point and the appearance of Jason’s actions being unprovoked,” according to a Monday news release from the Surprise Police Department. Hunt lived in the same neighborhood, and the homeowners invited him to a large gathering at their house near 144th Avenue and Carline Drive.

According to new information gathered by the police, he arrived at the home, engaged in small talk with others at the residence, then went inside along with the group to eat. He was given a plate of food and sat down, but only a few moments later, he stood, pulled a handgun out and shot at several individuals.

One of the people who was injured from gunfire then shot and killed Hunt. Police said they determined that individual, as well as any others who fought against Hunt, were acting in self-defense and in the defense of other innocent parties.

Hunt is suspected to have killed 38-year-old Carl Dinora and 41-year-old Conrradito Ochoa Navarro in the gunfire. Four others were severely injured and several more sustained minor injuries. As of Monday afternoon, police say Hunt’s motive remains unknown and the investigation remains active.

Thankfully this victim was armed and was able to stop the active shooter before he was able to murder anyone else.

According to a Tuesday update from Surprise police, Jason Hunt, 46, had been invited to a large gathering by the homeowner. At some point in the night, several attendees became involved in a “clash” and around 10:30 p.m. Hunt pulled out a handgun and began to fire, police said.

Surprise police said they have determined several other people at the residence subsequently fired handguns. Hunt and two other men — Carl Dinora, 38, and Conrradito Ochoa Navarro, 41 — were killed in the shooting. Additionally, four were hospitalized and several others sustained minor injuries.

I wonder if those other people shot each other accidentally. Unknown at this point.

It sounds like that information is no longer accurate, no?

From my link:

Police now consider the man who fired the first shot on July 3, who police identified as Hunt, to be the sole suspect in the case given “the evidence collected to this point and the appearance of Jason’s actions being unprovoked,” according to a Monday news release from the Surprise Police Department. The link you posted goes to the original (old / outdated) story. The newer link, that I posted, has been updated with the information released after further investigation. Is that not how it usually works?

Look at the top of the Yahoo page and you get this. "Sam Burdette, Arizona Republic Mon, July 11, 2022 at 10:31 PM". Top left is "AZCentral | The Arizona Republic". At the bottom "This article "originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Surprise shooter acted in self-defense during home attack, police say". Its not a new article nor an updated one, its just been posted to yahoo. If you go to the original article there is this at the top. "Sam Burdette Arizona Republic Published 5:13 pm, MT July 5, 2022". The date difference is because when you write an article on a web page and publish it, it will give the date you published it not an earlier or later date. So someone at yahoo copied part of it a couple of days later and published it, they just left out some stuff. That's why you never trust yahoo for news you always go to the original link.

I think his confusion comes from the fact that they linked to the older July 5th article within the updated July 11th article and he thought that Yahoo had changed the information, yet both articles were written by the same person.

I neither have nor had any confusion regarding the reported events and subsequent investigation.
My reply was to explain a generic SoP of mine and applaud its application. I have posted using yahoo as a source. I have seen many respectable news sources report with somewhat less than accurate adherence to facts and truth. I assume this is often due in part to the basic volume of information condensed and transmitted today. With the overall amount of news and editorials I expect that if I looked hard enough somewhere I would find gender reveal information on every mouse born born everywhere from Kansas City to Kandahar.

Stay safe.

but I'm still not sure where your confusion comes from.

The article I linked in the OP was sourced from a July 11th article. The article linked within that article was to the July 5th article you posted. The July 5th article covered the initial release of information. The July 11th article covered the updated release of information.

You're stuck on Yahoo as a source, yet both articles were written by Sam Burdette of the Arizona Republic.

I'll provide both links below to help make it easier to follow:

Arizona Republic July 5th Story (This is the article that you quoted in your initial reply to me and was from an outdated article published on July 5th)

Arizona Republic July 11th Story (This is the article I posted in my OP and contained updated information published on July 11th)

Does that clear things up? If not let me know and I can see what I can do to help.
