Joe Holcombe, 86, mourning the loss of the generations he had raised.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/06/us/shooting-victims-texas.html

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Tex. — One minute the Holcombes were a tight-knit family praying in the tiny church on Fourth Street.

The next, eight of them were gone.

Bryan and Karla Holcombe, a guest preacher and his wife, were dead.

Their son Marc Daniel Holcombe, gone. Their pregnant daughter-in-law, Crystal Holcombe, gone.

And four of their grandchildren — Noah, Emily, Megan and Greg — gone.

And the gunman nearly wiped out the Holcombe family, leaving Joe Holcombe, 86, Bryan’s father, to mourn the loss of the generations he had raised. “We know where they are now,” he said in an interview, his voice strained by exhaustion. “All of our family members, they’re all Christian. And it won’t be long until we’re with them.”

The day before, his daughter-in-law Crystal was at the county 4-H competition surrounded by her children, at least one of whom won an award, said Bob Baker, a Sutherland Springs resident who attended the event. A few days before that, Noah, 18 months, was bouncing on employees’ desks at her father’s office, digging into Halloween jack-o’-lanterns full of leftover candy.

America needs to ban all guns that are not single-shot hunting rifles. Handgun ban. Assault rifle ban. Semiautomatic ban.

Single-shot hunting rifles only. Have as many as you want. But not other guns. We support hunters. Not people who want to kill other people. And if you own a whole lot of non-hunting guns, or you are anti-gun control -- you are part of the problem.

Never do I hear one word from the gun banners about the predictable negative consequences of their "commonsense, reasonable" gun bans.

The CDC put out a gun research report in 2013. Among the findings was that there are at least 500 thousand self-defense uses of a firearm every year, compared with about 300 thousand criminal uses.

500,000, at least, and could be higher.

Tell me, how many of those 500,000 are you willing to see robbed and beaten and raped and murdered in order to get your "reasonable, commonsense " gun bans? How many gallons of blood are you willing to live with, so long as we get rid of the icky guns? What level of fascist police state will you tolerate in order to get rid of those guns? Cause let's face it, the only way a ban will ever be "effective" is if it's coupled with confiscation. Door to door searches, say good bye to the 4th amendment along with the 2nd. After all, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few heads, right?

And it's been shown worldwide. You have more handguns and semiauto rifles, more people die.

Pretty simple. The idea that more guns allows NRA-types to stop shootings is bunk. Yes, they can stop shootings, but only after a bunch of people already are killed.

Best way to stop gun crime: remove guns. Keep single-shot hunting rifles, ban all other guns.

Are you also going to remove NK's, Russia's China's, etc. guns? I'll grab a popcorn and a Dr Pepper while you work on that one. After all, Chicago's excuse for violent crime/shootings is Indiana, so if the USA bans guns, I'll guess the criminals will just import them from other areas. See: The War On Drugs.

Keep single-shot hunting rifles, ban all other guns.

What do you mean by "keep" them? Every hunting rifle that I know of is a repeater, whether lever, bolt, or semi-auto action. Are you referring to muzzle-loaders? They are hardly the typical "hunting rifle," although people do hunt with them.

I know the theory of "make the shot count," but it's better to have a follow-up shot and not need it than to need it and not have it. Wounded game running off to die slowly isn't exactly sporting.

I think the post I was responding to used the word "keep" to give the impression that hunters wouldn't be subject to any sort of confiscation of guns they already own. Nothing could be further from the truth. Trying to ban all repeaters would guarantee immediate pushback from even the Fuddiest of Fudds.

I'm guessing he/she doesn't have the full idea of exactly what's out there, and being used, or the actual #'s of arms being considered for "his/her" ban. Here in IL, some hunters use the single shot rifled 12 gauge. Don't know how many, but I am intellectually honest enough to admit that.

Most hunters I know who are using a rifled 12-gauge are using a pump. I've worked sight-in days before deer season at my local gun club for the past 10 years, and I can't recall seeing any single-shot shotguns.

beginning hunter, got shotgun, scope, sling, used, for $150.00. Used that for a couple of years until traded for an 870. Not saying it happens a lot, but it does occasionally.

I have an aftermarket for my 870, but I have zeroing problems. I got one with rifle sights, and mounted a scope on the receiver. Unfortunately, there is enough play in the receiver/barrel connection, that after 3-5 rounds, the barrel may shift slightly, and then the scope is no longer looking where the barrel is pointed. Should have gotten the cantilever mount, that should work a lot better. Started hunting with a Ruger 8 3/8" .44, 100 yard zero. 3 down with it so far.
