2. To quote the author:

"The Second Amendment was meant to accomplish two distinct goals…First, it was meant to guarantee the individual’s right to have arms for self-defense and self-preservation. These privately owned arms were meant to serve a larger purpose as well...and it is the coupling of these two objectives that has caused the most confusion. The customary American militia necessitated an armed public...the militia (being)...the body of the people. The argument that today’s National Guardsmen, members of a select militia, would constitute the only persons entitled to keep and bear arms has no historical foundation."

Joyce Lee Malcolm (born October 17, 1941) is the Patrick Henry Professor of Constitutional Law and the Second Amendment at George Mason University School of Law.

Looks like an exceptional read.

I'm a Democrat, and I'm glad Scalia is no longer with us. Naming a law school after the old bastard is the educational equivalent of erecting a confederate war "hero" statue, while such artifacts are justifiably coming down, all over the country. Given the enormous favors that Scalia did for the gun militancy movement in this country, I can see where members of the Gun Control/RKBA group wouldn't share my viewpoint. Suits me.

I realize you don't favor a number of his rulings and have no issue with opposition to nor criticism of his opinions on certain issues. He was a US SC Justice and I will not personally criticize a Justice, regardless of their positions. Let me also point out that his confirmation by the Senate was by a 98-0 vote. I just don't see the equivalence to CSA war hero or politician.

The discussion over the RKBA has been heated but the 2A is still part of the Bill of Rights. I don't expect that any article therein will ever be altered or removed. The debate is part of "the animated contest of freedom".

However, it's always fun to MMQB 98 US Senators.

May we likewise reject the work of those associated with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of
Public Health?

Or is such scrutiny to be reserved for those you deem not to have the proper antigun stance?
