Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumThe anti-fact gun opinions
The facts:
- The weapon used in the North Park Elementary School shooting in San Bernardino was a .357 magnum revolver.
- The targeted individual was a teacher.
- The assailant was her ex.
- The assailant was allowed into the school and permitted access to the classroom.
An example of an uniformed irrelevant opinion:
http://www.latimes.com/opinion/readersreact/la-ol-le-gun-control-san-bernardino-shooting-20170414-story.html
Clearly: the type of weapon used in this incident and any laws looking to ban it or similar weapons are going nowhere and are accomplishing a few entirely counterproductive effects:
1- Perpetuating the idea that Democrats want to "take your guns"
2- Alienate some fellow party members
3- Taking attention and resources away from measures that might actually reduce criminal access to guns
4- Discourage potential new Democrats interested in labor, wages and healthcare who respect an rkba
5- Give the Republicans a somewhat point to use in criticizing our party
6- Perpetuating the idea that "control" via the law is anything more than minimally viable
Learn it, embrace it: Control, beyond self-control, is a myth.

(706 posts)control. The fact that a 6 shooter was used by a man that should have been in jail is irrelevant.
If the anti-gun folks want to ban 6 shooters then you should change point 1 from:
Perpetuating the idea that Democrats want to "take your guns" to
Perpetuating the fact that Democrats want to "take your guns"

(18,578 posts)If someone makes a AR pattern rifle in single shot bolt action, that has a telescoping stock, optics rail, bayonet lug and flash suppressor, there will still be a "control" minded regressive ban fan somewhere who's mad about it and wants it to be illegal.

(18,578 posts)I believe just as there are "control" fanatics, there are likely "carry" fanatics who 'won't leave home without it'. I understand the suspicion each has for the other. I also believe there are politicians on both sides who literally play both ends against the middle as well as playing the middle against either end.

(2,375 posts)I was talking with an acquaintance who told me that an ex-roommate took his pistol into the shower with him.
I also believe there are politicians on both sides who literally play both ends against the middle as well as playing the middle against either end.
It can become quite intriguing to follow.

(18,578 posts)My fault. I wasn't saying I, well, I was saying I don't want to hear about politicians. I am getting tired of reading on this site about the crap that comes from the current administration and I would rather discuss issues. I think we all knew trump was evil a year ago.
I like discussing issues. I like the uplifting things I read in the lounge and a few other places. When I look through GD, I avoid the OPs with trump in the subject.
Are there any Democrats you favor for any office in the future?
I look forward to progress in the years to come.

(2,375 posts)Indeed there is ---- Jon Ossoff. I was planning on holding off before starting a thread on his intelligent position on "gun control".
Google 'jon ossoff gun control' and scroll down until you find the facebook interview with the woman interviewer described as a dodge by Mr. Ossoff. His response to the query about his position was absolutely perfect......though the interviewer clearly wasn't pleased, and I'm sure many DU'ers wouldn't be happy with it. Also -- google 'jon ossoff rachel maddow interview' and note his statement re. avoiding divisive national issues. Clearly this was a reference to "gun control" among other things.
Edited to add links to the items I mentioned:

(34,093 posts)Would seem we could go back to the same laws on gun carry as 75 years ago.

(18,578 posts)Someone willing to risk death for their goals or beliefs, will not be stopped by the chance of jail time.
Someone who plans to die, will be a touch more determined.

(3,819 posts)Colt's original revolver came out in 1836, I believe, and a double action was present shortly after the Civil War, IIRC. Do you still want to go that far back for your carry laws?

(3,819 posts)"The weapon was a typical handgun based on a 75 year old design."
The "1" in front of the "75".

(18,578 posts)I was being specific about the design of a .357 magnum revolver.
Trivia: a .357 magnum revolver is mentioned as the weapon used to kill the Jimmy Willis character in the movie My Cousin Vinny.

(1,273 posts)compared to the single-shot muzzle loading muskets that preceded it. I wonder if anyone back then said that revolvers should be banned from public ownership as weapons of war. I bet there were.

I'll wait here for the usual replies...
