LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Arkansas lawmakers voted Thursday to exempt college sporting events from a new state law that greatly expands where concealed handguns are allowed, moving quickly to address concerns about the sweeping gun rights measure leading to armed spectators at stadiums and arenas.
The Arkansas Senate voted 22-10 to add the exemption to a new state law that Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed Wednesday allowing concealed handguns at colleges, government buildings, some bars and even the state Capitol. It allows people with concealed handgun licenses to carry in the locations if they complete eight hours of active-shooter training.
The change , which now heads to the House, also would exempt the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the state hospital from the gun rights expansion.
The law as-is would let guns into Razorback Stadium while umbrellas remain banned. The lawmaker who called for the sports exemption noted that there's already police and security on hand for stadium and arena events.

where open carry was allowed?
... that the legislation was about concealed carry. And unless there are metal detectors at the stadium entrances, I would venture to guess that quite a few people are already carrying at such sporting events, legally or not.

(3,816 posts)OK, I'll play. For our scenario, let's say the guns are banned from stadiums. A loony toon with a grudge against a team/college decides that, since no "law abiding citizen" will be carrying a firearm, he can sneak his in, and do insurmountable damage in a highly concentrated target rich environment before being stopped/running out of ammo.
I mean, we are playing what if, right?? Not like it's a nightclub with security, or anything.

Despite the best efforts of the NRA, gun owners in Arkansas will not be allowed to bring their concealed handguns to Razorbacks football games this year. The Arkansas House of Representatives passed SB 724 this afternoon with a 71-20 vote. The vote came a week after Governor Asa Hutchinson signed HB 1249 into law, which would have allowed concealed carry in places such as government buildings, bars, and college campuses.
The initial bill was so obviously stupid that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement decrying the bill.
