Star Jessica Chastain nominated for Golden Globe despite weak ticket sales

Second Amendment fans are grinning as they watch the Hollywood gun-control film “Miss Sloane” bomb in historic fashion at the box office.

Starring Jessica Chastain, “Miss Sloane,” the story of a ruthless Washington lobbyist who takes on a powerful National Rifle Association-like organization, had the 75th-worst opening weekend since 1982, earning an anemic $1.8 million in wide release, according to Box Office Mojo.

That’s a measly $1,133 per theater. Still, Ms. Chastain was nominated Monday for a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a drama, although the film itself scored a mediocre 56 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film has been ripped by gun-rights advocates for its one-sided take on the firearms lobby, while the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has promoted the movie and touted its own “consulting” role.

1. I noticed the ads my local NPR affiliate for this film completely suppressed the gun angle,

knowing that mentioning it would be a huge turn-off. Even most fence-sitters wouldn't be too interested in paying $40 to sit through two hours of preaching.

IIRC, the ad portrayed as a "high-powered lobbyist decides to buck the establishment" story, which it most certainly isn't.

2. These films aren't expected to make money.

These are "prestige" films and are made to earn award nominations. They're paid for with the profits of the big budget action films that put butts in seats.

“Miss Sloane” cost $13 million to make, the equivalent of spare change found under the sofa cushions for EuropaCorp, the French film company founded by action director Luc Besson and most famous for distributing the violence-laden (and most assuredly anti-gun control) Taken franchise.

3. I didn't realize it was produced by the same people who did the Taken series. Geez.

"Guns are bad, unless I can make a bunch of money portraying their use by vigilantes and revenge killers, then the more the better." It's people like that that make me wish California wouldn't exempt VIPs and the entertainment industry from its rifle handgrip and magazine bans.

I liked the original Taken OK, except for the "wantonly torture your enemies and smile about it" part (!), and Taken 2 had its moments, but I didn't like Taken 2 well enough to watch Taken 3. Especially since any movie that starts by killing off Famke Janssen does not sound like one that would be entertaining to me; I'd rather go rewatch Tron. Or, heck, Wild Zero.

That's the second anti-gun film to go down faster than the Lusitania. Them boys got the dough.
