The first issue shouldnt be so complicated. It doesnt take specialized expertise in constitutional law to understand that current U.S. gun law gets its parameters from Supreme Court interpretations of the Second Amendment. But its right there in the First Amendment that we dont have to simply nod along with what follows. That the Second Amendment has been liberally interpreted doesnt prevent any of us from saying its been misinterpreted, or that it should be repealed.

Ban Guns, meanwhile, is not discriminatory in this way. Its not about dividing society into good and bad gun owners. Its about placing gun ownership itself in the bad category. Its worth adding that the anti-gun position is ultimately about police not carrying guns, either. That could never happen, right? Well, certainly not if we keep on insisting on its impossibility.

I've read a lot about police being over aggressive. I believe a minority of them are. I'm not aware of any police police force in a modern industrialized country that is 100% gun free.
Is there any case at all for repealing the 2A or any part of the BoR?

(20,992 posts)I have been told many times that 'absolutely NO ONE is suggesting, considering or talking about banning all guns.'
I did notice the verbal sleight-of-hand in the article. There is no such thing as "good" and "bad" gun owners. Gun owners are all bad.

(113,130 posts)I live in a city, too, but eight miles from me, it's bear and cougar country. I don't want to deprive anyone out there of the rifle or shotgun they need to defend themselves. If a bear gets this far into town, I can call animal control. They can't.
I also don't run sheep, although plenty of people here do, sheep that need to be defended from coyotes.
Having said that, there are some guns I want to go, like semi auto pistols. Those fucking things cause most of the grief around here. Runner up is the semi auto long gun, but it's not close.

Proposals for this ban have little to do with measureable societal problems, but sound like bans of convenience.

(18,577 posts)First, people everywhere are starting to realize guns are here to stay.
>>Mass shooters, rampage lunatics, fringe nutter killers and other assorted shooters/killers of multiple people are maybe 1% of all murderers. Trying to link and prevent those crimes by weapon type and regulation of that set is like nailing jello to a wall.
>>Many folks are noticing that violent crimes are mostly confined to a small part of the population and that such behavior can be mitigated when the causes are addressed.
Second, some pro-control folks seem to be less trusting of some of the 'ban them all' talking heads.
Third, it seems that because the rights vs control issue is so very fragmented with so many facets, meaningful progress will be painfully slow.

(12,148 posts)and it is a Wall Street oligarch that is pretty much singlehandedly funding rifle handgrip bans in this country.
Canada flirted with AWB's for a while as some of our protruding-handgrip hysteria leaked across the border, and they implemented a few restrictions, but nothing like CA/MA/CT. Canadians had the Tavor a long time before U.S. shooters did, and some very highly regarded AR-15's are made in Canada for the Canadian civilian market.
