I mean he coulda found grannies heart medication or her decorative knife collection or her poisonous snake habitat, etc.
If there's one thing I know it's this: no proud gun owner WILL EVER admit that guns are any part of the problem. No matter what.
Straw Man
(6,774 posts)False, and you know it. The problem is that it's a tautology: Without guns, no one could be shot. That by itself is not sufficient justification to outlaw private ownership of guns when we allow private ownership of many dangerous objects and substances, accepting the consequences of their misuse as "the price of freedom." Somehow you feel that we should not do this with guns, "Because gunz!"

(3,343 posts)Seen a gun owner advocate for gun control other than removing howitzers from playgrounds sort of nonsense.
I have had hundreds of conversations over the years about guns and it's never happened. There's always an excuse that explains away why removing guns isn't the answer.
So...
As for your opinion that the amount of good doesn't justify taking away toys from gun owners and Weapons from criminals, we'll agree to disagree.
I'd love a constitutional amendment removing all guns from the public and from the police - except for swat type groups.
I personally don't give a shit about the rights of gun owners to own deadly weapons. I care aot more about the thousands that die at the end of a gun each year.
As for the idea that all dangerous items are created equally - that's just silly. Saying a gun is as valuable to society as say an ambulance (handy for rushing children shot with gun to the hoslital) is obviously false. Yes both can cause harm, but if the main argument for ambulances was that you can use them to protect yourself from other ambulances well... You see my point.
Guns are an anachronism in 2016 and demanding access to them in the face of endless death and destruction "because guns" is IMO as stupid as anything Sarah Palin - another gun nut - has said or will ever say.

I am favor of universal background checks as long as they can be done in a non-intrusive manner, like opening NICS to private sales or issuing a firearms-purchase ID.
I favor safety training as a prerequisite to gun ownership, as long as it is convenient and not prohibitively expensive. I provide such training pro bono at local gun clubs.
So ... you were saying?
Who ever said that "all dangerous items are created equally"? I didn't. I said that we as a society accept levels of risk in the interest of freedom. We do it all over the place with all sorts of things. But once again, you say "No -- because gunz!"
In other words, you have staked out the most extreme anti-gun position possible, and then you complain that gun owners "never ever ever" agree with you.
Poor you.

With people like you around who "personally don't give a shit about the rights of gun owners", this surprises you?
Really?
Yes, and I'd love to take a ride with Klatu aboard the Millennium Falcon and spend a few hours playing Dejarik against Gort.
That's your opinion. Mine is that all things that are dangerous and potentially fatal ought to be given the same due respect.
Yours sounds like the view from an office rather than a workshop.
Your opinion being well outside the American mainstream is, again, noted.

(15,333 posts)As an aside, I find your choice of screenname rather amusing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays
Stunned by the degree to which the democracy slogan had swayed the public both at home and abroad, he wondered whether this propaganda model could be employed during peacetime.[citation needed] Due to negative implications surrounding the word propaganda because of its use by the Germans in World War I, he promoted the term public relations.[citation needed] According to the BBC interview with Bernays' daughter Anne, Bernays believed that the public's democratic judgment was "not to be relied upon" and feared that the American public "could very easily vote for the wrong man or want the wrong thing, so that they had to be guided from above." Anne interpreted "guidance" to mean that her father believed in a sort of "enlightened despotism"
Kindly peddle your 'guidance' elsewhere.

(3,343 posts)Two weeks ago when someone decided it was worth pointing out.
Or two weeks before that.
Or a month before that.
Or 6 weeks ago.
Or the thread someone made about it.
Or the other 100 comments people have made about it.
If you had then you'd have posted something interesting and worth discussing.
As it is you've simply chosen to attack the messenger. Or - worse still - attack the messengers screen name. In the same way that other child murder apologists have many times before.
Boring, unoriginal and a complete waste of your time.

(2,493 posts)Would say that this is an example of a negligent adult failing to adequately secure their firearm. If you are going to own a gun then you need to either have it on your person or have it secured.

(18,318 posts)Most data on childhood accidental deaths by-gun indicate many more kids are killed by other means; in fact, the National Safety Council says death by gun accident is the fastest following listed cause of death. Deaths are well below a hundred/year (some figures have the number at 62/yr), yet the number of guns in households has been increasing. The mother would have benefitted from better safety training, something the rest of the country is clearly taking seriously. I hope she stores her lyes, Drano and Sani-flush on top shelves, hopefully locked.

(12,194 posts)If this kids parents and grandparents had learned gun safety in high school, theres a good chance they'd have made better choices regarding storage.
I Imagine at least a few of those who are in highschool now, will have children in the future, including 5 year olds.

(5,078 posts)Must be great to be able to blow off the predictable statistics of the suicide of children in our country with some ideological boilerplate.
This year, children in the US killed more people than real adult murderers did in any other first world country.

I guess you'd rather fight about rifles with protruding grips and barrel shrouds, huh?

(12,194 posts)Although I'm pretty sure that saves less lives in the next 100 years than if we waited 20 years and instituted universal gun safety training in high school and counted the following 80.
If they really genuinely cared about lives, and this was really an altruistic crusade instead of a hate fueled witchhunt, they'd be all over that like...20 years ago.
But they weren't interested, they were looking in another direction then. In the direction of...*gasp*...rifles with protruding grips and barrel shrouds.
Imagine that.

(15,396 posts)At 46 you no longer qualify for the "militia" so I assume then they'd want to collect your firearms on your 46th Bday.
A little side note 4 or 5 years back we had a poster or 10 that didn't think "older" people should be allowed to own self defense safety devices and were big on age discrimination when it come to firearms. Kind of like they're huge regressives on the 2A in most all cases.

I'm surprised mrbenchley never tried to come back over the years...I assume he didn't, since he had more self control issues and a calculolz teacher gone wild, and they would stick out like a sore thumb.

If you've got young kids running around, you've got to be vigilant in order to keep them safe.
And sadly, even children of the most careful parents will occasionally find a way to get themselves hurt or killed...
