Connecticut State Legislature Passes Gun Control Bill Aimed at Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence

Victims of domestic violence in Connecticut will receive additional protections with the passing of a bill aimed at prohibiting those who are subject to a temporary restraining order from possessing firearms, thus eliminating a critical window of time during which a victim’s life could be at risk. The bill heads to the governor’s desk in the coming days for his signature before it becomes state law.

The bill passed in the Connecticut General Assembly -- the House passing its version of the bill last week, the Senate approving it Monday -- the latest action to strengthening gun laws following the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Gov. Dannel Malloy, who introduced the bill in February this year, said the bill is vital for the safety of domestic violence victims.

"We have a moral obligation to work to prevent needless tragedy and to make this the law,” he said in a statement Monday. “Women in abusive relationships are five times more likely to be killed if their abuser has access to a firearm. When an instance of domestic violence rises to the point that a temporary restraining order is needed, we must do everything we can to prevent tragedy. Now, Connecticut will take a commonsense step towards strengthening and enhancing our gun violence protection laws.”

5. the problem I have is that

they don't address the most common murder weapons in DV cases. Things like bare hands, baseball bats, knives. In fact, I know of a DV victim who if her fourth grade son didn't have access to a gun, she would be dead. Drunk step dad was in the process of, literally, beating her to death. Kid got the rifle from the cabinet and, shall we say, abruptly de escalated the situation.

only at the same rate they were before. That said, most of their murder victims are killed at home. They tend to have more home invasions and car jackings than we do. Most of our murders are criminals are killing each other. In the US, if you are not a gang member or doing someone else's SO, your chances of getting murdered here is actually lower than there.
BTW, that isn't what I said. I simply pointed an empirical fact.

BTW, there are more legal guns and legal gun owners in Australia than before. As for illegal guns, the Australian Federal Police have no clue. We do know that ten percent of them are basement made, often fully automatic, or have never been documented as legally entering or ever being registered.

I was too busy researching beyond John Howard's press releases and the media copy and paste. I was reading Australian media and peer reviewed articles in criminology journals. By the time I finished, the wash tub was empty and the cups were all gone.

4. all well and good, but what about

the murder weapons most commonly used in DV cases? Most DV murders are bare hands and mele weapons like baseball bats. Firearms are used something like one third of the murders, CT would probably be less than that.

Clay County sheriff says gunman killed ex-wife, girlfriend, her father

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - A man abducted his ex-girlfriend Tuesday and then shot and killed her, her father and his ex-wife before running from the scene and later taking his own life, Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said.

Murray Lancaster, 40, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a camper trailer on property belonging to his family, ending a manhunt in the deadly triple shooting in the small Clay County town of Green Cove Springs, Beseler said. Lancaster is a nephew of former Clay County Sheriff Scott Lancaster.

Beseler said Murray Lancaster kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, Valorie Short, at gunpoint from a Green Cove Springs hair salon on Orange Avenue about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and drove her to the Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club.

While responding to that call, police got another call about a shooting at the Rosemary Hill Road landfill.

Lancaster had driven there to find his ex-wife, Erica Green Lancaster, who worked there, and shot and killed her, Beseler said.

I-TEAM: Shooter had violent history

Lancaster, a Green Cove Springs resident, was arrested in March on charges of battery of Valorie Short and resisting arrest without violence, the I-TEAM learned.

Valorie Short told police that she took Lancaster's keys to keep him from drinking and driving. He got angry and "grabbed her wrist and shoved her aggressively against the basketball hoop pole. He held her against the pole with his forearms and his elbow on her neck."
