Pro-gun activist accidentally shot by son to face charge

Pro-gun activist accidentally shot by son to face charge

Jamie Gilt, the Florida pro-gun activist who was accidentally shot and wounded by her 4-year-old son, is expected to face a misdemeanor charge of allowing a minor access to a firearm, authorities said Tuesday.

Gilt, 31, was hospitalized earlier this month after the toddler accidentally shot her from the back seat of a car while she was sitting in the driver's seat, officials said.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday filed an affidavit with local prosecutors asking that Gilt be charged with the second-degree misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up to 180 days in jail, Capt. Gator DeLoach told reporters.

DeLoach said the sheriff's office supports the rights of citizens to own and possess firearms but gun owners have the "additional responsibility of ensuring children do not gain unintended access to a firearm in hopes of preventing tragedies like this."

Follow up to the incident many found quite jocular. Can't really complain with the charge though; she was negligent.

Though it would be difficult to write an episode as dumb as hers.

Gun-loving Florida woman who was accidentally shot by her own son won’t be giving up her firearms, says her mother...

....She was previously arrested in 2013 on a felony count of grand theft retail after police said she stole five pairs of shorts worth $455 from a Dillards in Jacksonville.

Gilt, who was unemployed at the time and currently lives with her mother on her farm, completed a felony pre-trial intervention program later that year and the charges were dropped.

Her mother said she resented the politicization of the “freakish accident” after gun control advocates seized on Gilt’s description of a new .45 caliber handgun as her “new toy” and her boast hours before the shooting that her 4-year-old son “gets jacked up” to engage in target practice.

vehicle - during which time her toddler escapes from his car-seat.

Question: if that child is then able to put the car in drive and in doing so, runs over his mother, but doesn't kill her, is she a jackass for choosing to continue driving her son around in the car?

Because she had to leave the car in gear. Cars these days are designed to prevent this sort of scenario from happening--brake-gear shift interlock. She could have done somthing similar with her weapon. Lock it in a case which probably came with the gun (mine did.) Put a trigger lock on it. Carry it on her person. Your scernario is a bust.

some believe it should be harsh

I would settle for no criminal charges, but termination of parental rights and sterilization.

at least progressives won't compromise their core values when it comes to guns/z/

Well, she taught her 4-year-old how to shoot a gun, alright. But, she didn't teach him how to aim. This is actually a good thing, because if he knew how to aim, he'd have popped her in the back of the head instead.

I expect when she gets out of the hospital, she'll teach him how to use a gun to masturbate himself.

(Can you tell that this story irks me...just a little?)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027708153

That was defended by some of the more outspoken gun control advocates?

Sadly it is not the first suggestion of children using firearms for sexual activity. I don't even bother to alert anymore; if a post is about guns/z/ any vile accusation or insinuation will be allowed to stand.

It's negligence and not an accident. They should do it every time something like this happens.

Which is what a lot of us having been saying for years.
