Cops: Ohio Felon Cleaning Handgun Shoots Downstairs Neighbor

Authorities in Ohio say a convicted felon accidentally fired a handgun while he was cleaning it, and the bullet hit his downstairs neighbor in the chest.

The (Canton) Repository reports ( http://bit.ly/1ooNbPT ) that a 43-year-old Canton man was arrested Tuesday night after a 53-year-old woman living in the apartment below his was shot.

The bullet was removed at a hospital. A Canton police lieutenant tells the newspaper the woman was in stable condition after surgery.

Police say the man wasn't allowed to have firearms because of a felonious assault conviction. He is being held on $50,000 bond and is expected to appear Wednesday in Canton Municipal Court.

2. DonP, seriously, explain something to me

Whenever I clean my guns, especially a semi-auto pistol, the magazine is removed and the slide is locked back and any round in the chamber is ejected. The firearm is visually inspected to ensure it's clear. The slide lock is then unlocked and the slide slides off the front (In most cases) of the firearm. It's impossible to fire the gun WHILE it's being cleaned (since it would be in pieces).

How in the world do people fire a gun while it's being cleaned.

Be blunt. I'm a big boy and can handle it.

3. It's usually a lie

For cops and civilians, "shot while cleaning your gun" is often a euphemism for suicide.

Usually it's either a purposeful self inflicted wound or sheer carelessness and the finger winds up in the trigger guard while handling the gun prior to field stripping. You can't run a patch with Hoppe's #9 down a barrel with a round in the chamber.

Also, some guns, Glocks specifically, need to have the trigger pulled for disassembly and they drop the magazine and don't work the slide three times to eject any chambered rounds, the way I was taught, before disassembly.

All irrelevant to the OP of course, since it was a felon who was barred from owning any type of firearm under any circumstances.

You have to pull the trigger to get the slide off. I too drop the magazine and rack the slide a good 4, 5, 6 times then visually inspect once I've locked it back.

11. 'Safe' and perhaps less embarassing excuse

Better reason than "I was practicing my quick draw" or "my wife told me to make sure the gun was unloaded so I pulled the trigger to prove it to her" or as noted "I was going to commit suicide and missed".

Back at a county I worked for a deputy accidentally shot themselves. On two different occasions. I moved so I don't know if they ever made it to the third time.

And I bet this gun cleaning was just wiping down the outside of a loaded firearm and when he got around the trigger enough pressure was applied to fire it.
