Background checks on gun sales more popular than Taylor Swift

Last edited Sun Feb 7, 2016, 06:12 PM - Edit history (1)

What do Taylor Swift, dogs and football have in common?

They’re three of America’s favorite things, according to a new Funny or Die video sponsored by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Calling for background checks on “every single gun sale” are actors Amanda Peet and Dennis Quaid, the latest in Hollywood to lend their clout to the gun control cause.

"Football, Taylor Swift, and dogs are some of the most popular things in this country," Quaid says.

You know, there are pro-RKBA celebrities as well. Somehow I doubt their celebrity status would mean much for you.

...the in the adventure of a vacation, getting there is half or more of experience. From the answers I read, I infer your respondent views passing laws and destroying the NRA as goals. Articulating neither the issue of homicides nor suicides nor accidental death is rather telling.

I submit that many pro-control folks are simply interested in finding an enemy and opposing anything the enemy favors.

you have no intention engaging with us.

We're quite happy to debate. One of the things that have endeared me to the RKBA advocates is their ready willingness to discuss studies, case law and other points of fact.

You, low post count and all, seem to think you're the first to ever come here, challenge us and then -- grow so frustrated with us not accepting your first words -- retreat to insults. You're not bringing anything new. In fact, it is the exact same banal routine that attends pretty much every Controller who ventures in here.

You can make as many pronouncements as you like about being in the majority but your side has achieved an "assault weapon" registration law that is largely ignored, the NY SAFE Act passed in the dead of night without debate (speaking of the cultist epithet) that is also primarily ignored, a magazine capacity limit in Colorado that lost the state legislature to the GOP, an executive action to cancel reciprocity that resulted in a retreat less the legislature pass by veto-proof margins Constitutional-carry laws and an AWB that the 4th Circuit said is subject to strict scrutiny.

By the way, the NRA isn't the only RKBA organization. Is it just the NRA you have a problem with or is it also the 1A that you find so nettlesome?

The majority of Americans favor reasonable gun control, better background checks, and restrictions on particular weapons and ammunition.

Until you show them your view of "reasonable", then the support you speak of evaporates. Maybe it was just a mirage.

However, what is "cultist" about the gun nut crowd (here and elsewhere) is the view that your "rights" are absolute above the interests and safety of the public.

Ahh, the politics of misrepresentation and projection. We do not see a conflict between our rights and the interests and safety of the public. The only people that see that, are people like you. You're misrepresenting our position, projecting yours on to us. And you got caught. Tut tut...

If pressed, most of you would admit it's a good idea we don't let people open carry RPGs or drive to work in M1A tanks or own their own howitzers.

If we strip away the hyperbole here, we're left with the 'howitzer' comment. Guess what genius: We DO let people own their own howitzers, and tanks, and RPGs. You haven't the foggiest idea of what the facts even are. Its a shame you bothered to preach without them, but then, cultists do that. Are you projecting again too?

Those are all arms you don't have a right to keep or bear in the US.

Bzzt. Wrong again.

So right there, unless you're one of the few who actually does think that would be OK, you favor restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms.

Spoken as if theres a sizable number of people, not to mention posters on DU, who actually believe in no restrictions. Strawman much?

Where you draw the line is a matter of debate. When I call you cultists, it is to point out you are uninterested in the debate, uninterested in any sort of compromise or conceding any validity to the points of your perceived opposition.

Oh this is rich, Oh so rich.

If we are the ones uninterested in debate, why is it always people on your side of the argument running away:

Done here, I can't argue with cultists.

You are aware of who authored that projectionist screed right before running away, I trust?

We have an anti-gun poster here who posts google dumps in multiples daily, who is the host of the anti-gun group, who essentially never debates anything. Like I said, its basically always the anti-gun types that run away. I'll find you 20 examples of anti-gun posters running from the argument for every one you can find of a pro-gun poster doing the same. So yeah, another misrepresentation.

And "compromise"? Please. We know how anti-gun folks feel about compromise. Just because your head is buried in the sand, doesn't mean everyone elses is. Here we go, an example of how anti-gunners actually feel about real compromise:

Bloomberg gun-safety group has a new target: Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe

I noticed your absence in that thread. Pop on over and leave a comment, wont you? I'm game to discuss it. I won't run away. Are you? Will you?

As to the validity of the points of the perceived opposition, when I see some validity, I'll point it out. So far I haven't seen much of any. Penis jokes and the accusation of "nra talking points" don't constitute validity, just so you're aware.

At some point when the bodies are stacked high enough this nation will turn its fury on the NRA and its death cult supporters.

Spoken like a true lifelong hunter and gun owner.

And gun control never seems to be able to get all your imaginary friends that support your thinking to the polls to vote in gun control legislators.

But, gun control supporters as a group have proven to be notably cheap and lazy out in the real world where only votes matter.

So you keep faith with your "Stack-O-Polls" and we'll go with the actual votes.

(Cue the pathetic; "But the NRA buys all the legislatures" excuse for two decades of failure.)
