GOP now spelled ‘NRA’

The Republican Party has become a front for the National Rifle Association (NRA). Its arguments against any gun control border on the absurd. Now this comment, no doubt, will bring me widespread condemnation from the gun reactionaries populating this state but the arguments against the most sensible curbs proposed by President Barack Obama are mere confections.

Take, for example, the President’s move to expand background checks to cover more firearms sold at gun shows, online and anywhere else. If somebody is in the business of selling guns as opposed to isolated sales, regardless of where he or she sells the guns for profit, regulations will designate them as gun dealers. This appellation angers gun enthusiasts who counter that criminals always get guns. The reason why that argument is correct is because upwards of 40 percent of guns are sold without any background checks hence their availability to the bad guys. It’s the very opposition to any regulations by the NRA which makes the argument a truism. The reality is that criminals in so-called strict gun regulatory states purchase their firearms in states with loose regulation. While NRA supporters tote the fact that strict gun control doesn’t work as evidenced by jurisdictions that have strict laws but multiple gun-related deaths, the fact is that the NRA opposition to background checks enhances the problem of access by criminals or mentally ill people who purchase without any background checks across the border or online because they can do so.

The ultimate ludicrousness of the Republican opposition becomes apparent when Congress refuses to ban purchases of guns by those on the terrorist watch list. The argument there is that some people may be mistakenly on that list. So what? There is an avenue to get your named removed but talk about the tail wagging the dog. It’s the same stupid argument that Democrats make about background checks for illegal immigrants in job-hiring. Because there might be a few errors and the system isn’t 100 percent perfect then you shouldn’t do any check. In both instances the politicians who espouse these respective views have sold their souls to special interests.

were banned from voting would the reply still be "So what?"

Of course you would have to show an ID to prove who you are; we don't want terrorists voting for our elected officials.

What a twisted interpretation of reality. It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that there are 10 times as many gun rights supporters as anti-gun folk, could it? Naa...

No. Not really. They're against mandating smart guns. And so am I and tens of millions of other Americans.

The NRA is hell bent on making the people of America at risk for murders or mass killings.

Nope. The nra just wants people like you to leave 'the line' that separates actual military hardware from civilian lawful firearms, alone. And so do I and tens of millions of other Americans.

Yet voters continue to elect them.

Some folks see the truth of this. Others continue to be hostile to guns and gun owners and the rights they find important, pushing them toward republicans. Then they complain that the nra and gun owners are "republican/gop", after having done so much to make it happen.

Its cute, but its transparent, and very old, as arguments go. I could smell the mold and the must before I even opened the thread.

Or do you just whine online and consider your part done, as in "There, I sure told them off"?

Soooo ... Sent any gun control groups a check lately? (The other group has made it easy with addresses for all of them) How about giving up a couple days of work and pay to meet with state or federal legislators on gun control? Maybe attending a town hall to protest a new gun store or shooting range? Circulating any petitions to repeal concealed carry in your state or the 2nd amendment? Joined any local protests to stop the "death spewers" being sold in your community? Anything???

I also noticed you conveniently overlooked all the Democrats in Congress that won't vote for more gun control either.

The NRA is just a convenient excuse for the utter failure and irrelevancy of gun control and lackluster gun control supporters.

We get a lot of foaming at the mouth NRA haters down here, but surprisingly none of them ever seems to be able to cite any actual NRA site, speech, article or anything tangible for any of the things you claim. But "they all just know" they do those things, because they read it on the internet, so it must be true.

And none of the eager beaver gun control fans ever seems to actually do anything about their "deeply and passionately held feelings" about gun control. Well, besides whining online as if it matters in the real world.
