Second story in the Tribune in a week where citizens did what we've been told by our dear friend Shannon Watts and others never happens. And in both cases the criminals already had their guns in hand.

"An employee at a Far South Side cellphone retailer shot two would-be robbers late Wednesday morning, at least the second time in a week a worker has shot two robbery suspects at a Chicago business, according to police and store officials.

Two men drew handguns as they entered a cell phone store, 2051 E. 95th St., in the Calumet Heights neighborhood around 11 a.m., prompting one of the workers at the store to take out his own firearm and shoot them, according to an account from employees given to Neil Tadros, who identified himself as the district manager for T-Mobile.

The employee shot both of the suspects, but they fled the store, got in a car and drove themselves to the hospital, Tadros said. At the time the suspects brandished weapons, employees acted, “Pretty much to protect themselves when guns are drawn at them. Thank God for concealed carry” Tadros said.

The men, ages 24 and 35, walked into South Shore Hospital and were transferred in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said. The 35-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his left arm and groin, and the 24-year-old man was shot in the left arm and abdomen, police said."

Now I guess we wait for the "equivalency counter stories", where a criminal did something with a gun, so it's all equal. To some people there's just no difference between self defense and a crime.

1. Good for him, but I'm a bit unclear on something

Is a concealed gun permit needed for a business owner to keep a loaded firearm in a drawer by his cash register?

Reason I ask, my granddad owned a feed store, it was actually a country store that carried a little bit of everything. It was a cash business and it was in a fairly remote location. One of the coolest things about visiting his store was the Colt Single Action Army Revolver he kept under the counter. It was exactly like the guns I used to see in the cowboy movies and sometimes he would let me fire at cans on a fencepost. Now this was 60 years ago and it was in rural Tennessee, but your post made me wonder if he would have to have a permit to keep the gun on site if he was still around.

I would not own any kind of retail business without keeping a firearm handy.

3. Depends on the state

In my state a business can choose to allow employees to carry guns on the premises. This has always been the law here even before concealed carry was legal.

But in "MOST" states that I am aware of, it is OK.

You mention Tennessee... Yes, a business owner may have a concealed weapon on the property, WITHOUT any permit (provided it is legal for him/her to possess the gun in the first place)

It would be up too him to know the laws of the state regarding it's use.

8. In Illinois it's the store owner's option

They can either allow open or concealed carry or forbid any firearms at all.

Pretty much every gun store I've ever been in has everyone open carrying.

I think the article mentions the permit because CCW is still a relatively "new" idea in Illinois and they tend to always bring up whether the shooter had a valid Illinois FOID card and a CCW permit.

But they never bring it up in street shootings though, for some odd reason. It's almost as if they want people to think there's no real difference between gang members shooting it out in a park and someone who jumped through all the legal hoops to get a permit.

9. The article didn't mention the store owner's gun by the register, ...

... it said the clerk drew his own gun. For that, yes, he probably needs a permit.

2. Here is a former administrator writing about

one of the dead teenagers from the other story. The big thing that I noted was the call for more counseling services in the school. I am not sure indicting the discipline policy is correct if the behavior was disruptive to the other students. I would like to see a more liberal school uniform (ie dress code). Perhaps no articles of clothing with identifiable text or symbols (so someone can go to Wal Mart and purchase non-descript and inexpensive clothing).

I absolutely do not agree with praying with the student at school. I don't see how that is a solution to anything.

4. What a rude toter!

Those guys only wanted a few airtime minutes to tide them over to the end of the month. And the 24 year old - he was just a teenager who was confused by propaganda from the gun culture.

6. just happened here a couple of days ago

Clerk pulled a weapon on armed robbery and he ran away. All caught on cctv. Of course with no shots fired, it does not count.
