Father of Marysville school shooter to be sentenced

Federal prosecutors are asking that the father of a teenager who shot and killed four classmates at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 2014 be sent to prison for 33 months when he is sentenced Monday for illegally possessing six guns, including the. 40-caliber pistol used by his son in the slayings.

Lawyers for Raymond Lee Fryberg Jr., however, say the tragic case has unfairly turned him into a “poster child” for perceived shortcomings in gun laws. They ask U.S. District Judge James Robart not to imprison Fryberg at all for his September convictions on six counts of illegally buying and possessing firearms.

“It cannot be ignored that Fryberg’s unlawful possession of the Beretta PX4 Storm, .40 caliber handgun is indirectly related to the use of that handgun by his 15-year-old son,” Jaylen, who on Oct. 24, 2014, used it to kill four classmates, wound a fifth, then take his own life in the cafeteria, wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Ye-Ting Woo.

Woo said the government recognizes Fryberg can’t be punished for actions of others, but argued that the fact Fryberg illegally had the gun and allowed his son to have access to it “cannot be ignored and certainly played a contributing role” in the deaths.

He should be charged. It also says that relevant information was not forwarded to the NICS. Sounds like we have been saying all alond, enforce existing federal law and insure the NICS database is accurate. Thanks for pointing out we have been right all along.

the NICS. Almost none of it has been spent in all these years because the NRA lobbyist bought the Republicans on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

It's fun to talk about enforcing laws when you know it can't be done because of one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington.

What laws that aren't intentionally crafted to be unenforceable due to Gun Lobby interference, uh help, are de-funded.

Gun lovers talk out of both sides of their mouth.

Without the insult.

What good is trying to make new laws even you admit will not be enforced. At least I call for the existing ones to be funded and enforced. Do you have a link to the claim on the funding issue?

I'm really tired of spoon feeding gun people who ignore or simply don't believe anything that isn't NRA certified.

the actions of the NRA to him even though his comments place him in opposition to what you complain about and in agreement with you.

It seems more like you're just spoiling for a fight. Is there some deep seated psychological need you feel driven to satisfy that requires you to squander an opportunity for consensus just to belittle the hated others?

So that when the NRA pushes this or pushes that, the controllers can say "we" are part of it. Perhaps the controllers should look more closely at their role in creating the modern NRA, so when that organization proves too powerful for their meager efforts they won't come around here, whining and demanding we do something about the thing what got up off the slab. Jeeez.

BY MARTHA BELLISLE

SEATTLE - The father of a teenager who used his dad's gun to kill four classmates and then himself at a Washington state high school was sentenced Monday to two years in prison on firearms charges.

Raymond Fryberg apologized for his son's actions in U.S. District Court. He was convicted in September of illegally owning six firearms, including the gun that his 15-year-old son, Jaylen, used in the 2014 school shooting.
