Holmes fired 76 shots in the theater: six from the shotgun, 65 from the semi-automatic rifle, and five from the .40-caliber handgun. His mayhem killed 12 people and injured dozens. I've fired more than 76 shots in an afternoon of practice at the range. Yes Holmes did buy thousands of rounds of ammo but to do what he did, he only needed 76.
In the wrong hands exactly 1 round can equal a catastrophe. Worrying about stockpiling is just another train wreck of an idea. I remember a quote from the movie The Peacemaker from Nicole Kidman's character: "I'm not afraid of the man who wants ten nuclear weapons, Colonel. I'm terrified of the man who only wants one."

(1,941 posts)I had 700 rounds in my trunk, and I remember thinking about how controllers would describe that as an "ammo cache". Mind you, this was all contained within 3 small boxes that fit inside of a grocery bag. One brick of .22LR (500 rounds) and 2 boxes of Remington UMC 9mm (200 rounds total).
My DW and FIL ended up going through about 500 rounds of it with me over the course of an hour. For someone who shoots regularly, it is common place to have thousands of rounds on hand to avoid having to routinely stop in to your local Wally World or remain constantly seated at a reloading bench.

(16,974 posts)That have just too much ammunition. 50 rounds max is all you should get to keep on hand.

(1,941 posts)You know if I only had 50 rounds, I wouldn't even bother getting the guns dirty. I can see how a true rifleman could spend hours shooting 50 rounds...but I mainly shoot handguns and .22LR rifles for fun.

(18,578 posts)Well there were about 14 of us and the trip was combined with 4 days of camping. So there was a 10/.22 Ruger, 4 Garands, a 12 gauge, an odd .35 revolver, a few .22 bolt rifles, a 9mm, a few M1911s, 2 M1 carbines and lever action Winchester that I never got to fire. The cop brought his duty gun and a Thompson. I'm sure there was at least 4,000 of .22 alone. Add to that a few thousand rounds of .45, maybe 2,000 rounds of .30-06 and I'd guess probably getting close to 15,000 rounds overall.
All that and I guess we weren't conservative enough to call ourselves militia.
