Related: About this forumVirginia to end concealed carry reciprocity with other states
The move also means Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home.
Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements can prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed weapon.
To me, this is a commonsense step that can help make Virginians and our law enforcement officers safer by ensuring that Virginias laws on who can and cannot carry a concealed handgun are applied evenly, consistently, and fairly, he said in a statement provided to The Washington Post.

(3,706 posts)Virginia has decided not to honor CHL's from states whose requirements are more lax than Virginia's. That is most, but not all, of them. The idea is that if Virginia imposes a requirement they do not want their residents going to another state to bypass that requirement, which is kind of common sense. But it is sure to piss off the NRA, since it ever so slightly fails to be pro-guns-everywhere.

(9,951 posts)If states start requiring the same level as VA, then they'll be added to the VA approved list.

(12,148 posts)NC requires a Federal background check, state background check, mental health records check, FBI and state fingerprint check, an 8 hour class on firearms law (more than Virginia requires; a hunter's safety class will do in VA, IIRC), and demonstrated competence with a handgun on a shooting range at realistic self-defense distances, live fire. Our gun laws are also stricter than Virginia's in general. What more would you want?
About the only thing we don't do is NYC-style means testing to limit carry licensure to the likes of Donald Trump, Charles Schumer, and the publisher of the New York Times.
This isn't about safety; this is about jerking people around that you don't like. And there are a whole lot of Dems and indies who just got our (concealed) carry privileges in Virginia suspended. The upshot will be to require those of us visiting or passing through Virginia to open carry in order to stay legal, which is stupid (because I'm not personally a fan of open carry, and it's ridiculous to be forced to open carry because of childish political stunts like this).

(16,974 posts)We should have a national standard as a gun safety measure. I assume you agree with this as it is all about safety.

(10,136 posts)The current VA law allows VA residents to get a CC permit from another state that is honored by VA instead of requiring VA residents to get a VA permit?
That would seem to be the part that needs to be fixed.

Apparently. It seems they really threw the baby out with the bathwater, because now VA CCW holders won't be able to carry in all those states either. Reciprocity is reciprocity.

I can open carry in VA even though I am a NC
resident?

(6,185 posts)I wonder if that will backfire on the AG, when more out of state and in state people start open carrying?

(5,046 posts)Telling out of state folks, that since VA no longer honors most out of state permits, that Open Carry is completely legal...And encouraged...
Let them piss themselves about that one...
In all my years, I have never seen so many folks stirred up like this on a gun issue. Their *will* be electoral consequences.
And they will be completely deserved.

Might have to chalk up another Dem ruined by listening to Bloomberg. The line forma over there.

(1,941 posts)This has nothing to do with public safety. This is just a publicity stunt to say he (AG) and the governor "took action on gun violence". Yet, very few if any out of state CCWers have ever been convicted of crimes in Virginia. This is what the governor and AG have been reduced to in pushing gun control. Sad.
Several of the states removed from the reciprocity list actually have more burdensome anti-rights CCW permitting processes. The AG acted unilaterally. Considering he only won by about 1000 votes...this was not a wise move politically. Additionally, open carry is legal in VA so if you are from out of state, open carry in accordance with state law is still an option.
