Wasserman Schultz' gun control appeal rouses Democrats

BAY LAKE -- In revving up Florida Democrats gathered at Walt Disney World for their annual convention this weekend, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz made an impassioned appeal for the party to push for gun control.

Wasserman Schultz, who chairs the Democratic National Committee, spoke on most of Democratic causes on the second day of the Florida Democratic Party’s convention at Walt Disney World’s Yacht and Beach Club conference center.

But her statements to tie widespread gun ownership to mass shootings, and to 30,000 gun deaths a year, most of them among African Americans, brought more applause than all other issues.

“Democrats! We must close the gun show loophole! Democrats! We must require background checks for all gun purchases!” Wasserman Schultz, of Weston, demanded. “We can’t sit idly by and allow thousands and thousands of lives to be mowed down!”

actually 2/3 of those deaths are suicides and I doubt they are mostly all AA.. Just more pushing of things that are not really true.

“We can’t sit idly by and allow thousands and thousands of lives to be mowed down!”

So what plans does she have to stop those 2/3 of those deaths that choose to end life using a firearm?

suicide by firearm is roughly half of all suicides. I'm not naive to think those who chose firearm with one handy, wouldn't choose a rope or battery acid if a gun wasn't available. Hell, one of my brother's high school friends had several guns to choose from, but chose to drink battery acid instead.
Having 21K more rope deaths might be progress to the likes of Bloomberg, but it isn't to me, and I don't think it is to you either.

Neither is the undeniable fact that human lives are taken in great numbers by means not involving firearms. But, that conversation seems to give you comfort.

Bottom line: in the absence of firearms AT LEAST 10,000 lives would be saved every year.

Cue the cliches...

... are you saying that the real goal is the total absence of firearms?

So I'm ok with UBCs and closing the "loophole" if it makes people feel better, and both seem to have broad support. Doubt it will do anything to curb murders though, and almost certainly won't impact suicides.

Off topic, I was at staying at Yacht Club that weekend and ran into Congressman Pat Murphy. Seemed nice enough. Otherwise it was a bit irritating to have a convention of any kind at your vacation hotel.

The alert squads are very very busy.

I wonder, how long they think this can go on, without people deciding a counter alert squad should be employed.

I'm seeing a lot of hides happen during low activity periods.

It appears that it is much easier to stack a jury if a group of like minded individuals coordinate to alert and be present during low activity times.

I consider this from post 19 being hidden, as evidence supporting my theory:

I think a more productive approach is to begin posting SD actions in GD. whenever the special dispensation to post anti-gun stuff is in effect -- which seems most of the time, now. Sarisataka has been posting these in GCRKBA. I think they should go in GD until there is clarity about when special dispensation went into effect, why, and for how long. It appears the controller-banners are pushing for All Gunz, All the Time in GD, while (presumably) still retaining TOS alert powers to object to gun posts they find objectionable.

There is nothing that I can see, that even remotely qualifies as 'hide worthy' there.
