Gun Violence In US: Amid Terrorism Worries, More Americans Fear Being Victim Of Firearms, Poll Finds

More Americans are more worried about being a victim of gun violence than a victim of terrorism, according to a McClatchy/Marist poll released Tuesday. Of the Americans surveyed, 63 percent said they feared they or someone they know would die as a result of gun violence, compared with the 29 percent who said they register terrorist attacks as more of a fear.

The poll also shows a split between Republican and Democrats as to what they perceive as a bigger threat. Some 77 percent of Democrats surveyed viewed guns as a bigger fear over terrorism, while Republicans saw terrorism as a bigger threat by 55-45. Tea party supporters were also skewed more toward viewing terrorism as a bigger threat by a 57-37 percent margin.

U.S. voters are expected to consider domestic issues, such as the economy and healthcare, over foreign issues in the 2016 election. This contrasts with the years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, during which voters looked much more prominently at foreign issues, the poll said.

The poll comes amid increased scrutiny over gun violence across the country and national disagreement over gun laws. According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll from October, 46 percent of people surveyed efforts to reduce gun violence should be a bigger priority over protecting the rights to own guns. Some 47 percent of people said it was more important to protect the right to own guns.

Over 11,000 gun deaths in a year.

First grade math abilities is all that's needed to figure it out. But not in the US.

According to the 2014 FBI Crime Statistics, Expanded Homicide Data Table 9 there were 8,124 murders by firearms. There were 519 murders by firearm of persons age 18 or less. Firearms were used in 67.92% of the murders, with handguns used in 68% of firearm murders, and rifles/shotguns used in 3% each in firearm murders.

Given that we had over 10,000 deaths due to DUI in 2013 (the latest year for which I could find data) and no one ever complains about that, I begin to wonder what is driving this bus.

Comparing the FBI data from 2013, rather than 2014, the year cited in your CDC data, the FBI and CDC numbers do not align. In fact, they're very different. Even accounting for the fact that CDC "homicides" could include justifiable homicides, while the FBI expressly cites only "murder," the discrepancy still seem quite odd.

2013:

CDC:
-All Homicides: 16,121
-Firearms Homicide: 11,208

FBI:
-All Murders: 12,253
-Murder by Firearm: 8,454

Two big ones are that the CDC data has a wider coverage (it draws from state vital registrars and is mandatory, rather than voluntary reporting by police departments) and the CDC data includes negligent homicides (the UCR counts deliberate and non-negligent homicides).

Overall, I think the CDC data is a more complete picture of 'people killed by other people' if that's the desired data - the UCR has a slightly different purpose...

Last month they told us our pension was 100% funded for the first time in a decade. This week we were told it was only 85%, without explaining what went wrong.

Guns sure aren't anything to be sacred of, terrorism isn't too bad for most of us in America.

It's always wise to carry your PSD and be aware, but never be afraid.
