Bernie Sanders flips on crucial gun control position days ahead of the first Democratic debate
Sanders now says he's willing to reconsider holding gun manufacturers liable for gun deaths
snip-----------------
This week, it is Bernie Sanderss reconsideration of his longstanding opposition to holding gun manufacturers liable for gun deaths in the wake of a rash of school shootings.
Sanders cited two shootings Friday at universities in Arizona and Texas as well as last weeks slayings at an Oregon community college when he told NBCs Chuck Todd during a Meet the Press interview on Sunday that hed take another look at his past position. In 2005, Sanders supported legislation protecting gun manufacturers from civil liability lawsuits.
That was a complicated vote and Im willing to see changes in that provision, Sanders said. Heres the reason I voted the way I voted: If you are a gun shop owner in Vermont and you sell somebody a gun and that person flips out and then kills somebody, I dont think its really fair to hold that person responsible, the gun shop owner.
On the other hand, where there is a problem, is there is evidence that manufacturers, gun manufacturers, do know that theyre selling a whole lot of guns in an area that really should not be buying that many guns, that many of those guns are going to other areas, probably for criminal purposes? he asked. So, can we take another look at that liability issue? Yes.

(5,417 posts)Gun manufacturers dont sell guns to gun stores. Distributors do. Maybe the distributor knows that a certain area is buying a lot of guns, but that doesn't mean they are bought for illegal purposes.
Plus unless they get data from every distributor out there, they really dont even know if their sales in that area are higher.

(9,951 posts)but he's totally wrong on this, manufacturers don't sell to gun stores, they sell to distributors, who then sell them to FFL dealers, that's Federal law.
Ya know stone, maybe you should do some research before posting a story that has false info.

(9,951 posts)despite your fervent wish, the PLCAA isn't going away, the SCOTUS has already ruled it constitutional and with a repub controlled Congress, there will be no repeal.

(6,185 posts)The cities and individuals that tried suing the gun makers for illegal use of a legal product weren't actually winning anything.
Their goal was to use mounting legal fees to try and bankrupt the gun manufacturers. Of course there was a problem because some of the same companies they were trying to bankrupt have big government contracts for military firearms. The folks on Capitol Hill came to the "brilliant" realization that there might be nobody left to make their M4s, M9s etc. Catch 22.
Now the cities are paying the NRA, SAF et. al. millions in legal fees for all the cases being lost in the courts.
