California bans concealed handguns on college, school campuses

Expands existing prohibition on firearm possession that exempted concealed carry permits

BY ALEXEI KOSEFF

Gov. Jerry Brown on Saturday signed legislation to ban the concealed carry of handguns at colleges and schools, further tightening California firearms restrictions that are already among the strictest in the nation.

Current California law makes it illegal to possess a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school or on a college campus without permission from administrators, but it exempts those with concealed carry permits.

Senate Bill 707, by Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Davis, expands the prohibition on school and college grounds to include concealed weapons, while keeping the same rules in place for the 1,000-foot zone surrounding schools. Active and retire law enforcement officers are not covered by the law.

The fight over whether guns should be allowed on college campuses is gaining prominence nationally. Advocates argue that students may be able to help prevent crimes such as mass shootings and rapes, but gun control supporters counter that throwing firearms onto campuses with young people, alcohol, mental health issues and strongly held beliefs on controversial topics is a dangerous mix.

California? 'Nuff said.

What does Gov. Brown think is going to happen? Why do other states that allow for CC on their campuses not experienced any problems with CHL holders?
I guess that someone with evil intent will look at this law and decide not to shoot up a campus because, well, IT"S ILLEGAL.

he's leaving on his own accord and his irrational fears.
Funny how the rest of the faculty aren't worried about CC in the least, it sounds like this idiot was looking for any reason to leave to take the job in Sydney, Aus. and this came about.

So, again, what faculty is being "forced" to flee?
And how is one idiot "professor" leaving the destruction of higher education?

Because Texas permits campus carry? That's silly -- is it your position that if Texas banned campus carry that those criminals who wanted to shoot someone would be deterred? I find it hard to believe that anyone really thinks that campus carry somehow leads to more murders.

Is that it has zero impact on shootings. Is some person intent on shooting up a school going to say, "wait, what, I can't carry here, that means I can't take my gun on campus"? If someone's goal is to kill someone else the fact that they can't legally carry a concealed weapon isn't going to dissuade them. So anyway, a pointless law but whatever.

...CC all the time and come up with the idea to kill on a whim, you know, a spur of the moment thought.

Instead of "I coulda hada V8" it's "oh, I can going murder folks".
Didn't you know? That's all the folks that regularly CC can ever think about.

to give Sen. Wolk a little credit, but the final version only struck the language about CCW holders. I suspect few people knew that permitted-CCW was actually allowed on CA college campuses (but it would have become known if there had ever been a problem, right?)...

What sort of impact are The Controllers hoping to make by prohibiting concealed carry on campus in the more rural areas of the state?

More useless knee-jerk legislation. Well......if it gives The Controllers a little something to jump up and down about perhaps it's served some purpose. After all, the poor folks have been having their backsides handed to them in such major ways for so long I suppose they deserve a nugget now and again.
