(730 posts)I have multiple certifications, in many fields.
In order to renew most of them, I need to re-cert. This usually involves a 6-8 hour class and a test to garner my understanding of the subject.
Heck, to renew my driver's license, I need an eye test.
To renew my instructor creds and my RSO certs all i need do is send the NRA a check. I clears, I'm good for two more years.
The NRA doesn't give a rat's ass if I understand gun safety. They care that I pay them.
I have lobbied my state a few times to kick the NRA out of the certification business. They care little about safety, just sales.

(49,445 posts)I have received several alerts on this, which I will address individually, as usual.
However, the discussion of the NRA's effect on politics is inherently part of the SoP of this Group so I see no cause for closing this thread down. As Host, I don't believe that inherent worth of an OP (or lack thereof) is mine to judge if a thread should be locked or left open, but only whether it fits the SoP of the Group.
Thank you all for keeping an eye on things,

That's how it works if you kill somebody in the US.
Let us know how it goes when you call the police station to report the murders and tell them to hurry right over.
Then you can tell them about all the murders by drunk drivers caused by GM and Ford too.
What a maroon.

(6,498 posts)Cocks not glocks: Dildos to replace guns at UT-Austin campus carry protest
By Lauren McGaughy
Updated 1:30 pm, Saturday, October 10, 2015
AUSTIN - Hundreds of students at the University of Texas at Austin will protest a new law will allow more guns on campus not with signs or sit-ins, but by "strapping gigantic swinging dildos to our backpacks."
Their mantra? #CocksNotGlocks
Jessica Jin, who set up the "Campus (DILDO) Carry" event on Facebook, invokes the argument that allowing more guns on campus will make students safe is a fallacy. She's urging students to send campus leaders that message by strapping on the plastic phalluses.
"'You're carrying a gun to class? Yeah well I'm carrying a HUGE DILDO,'" Jin says in the group's description. "Just about as effective at protecting us from sociopathic shooters, but much safer for recreational play."
More than 330 people had signed up to participate by Saturday morning. The "strap in" will occur on Aug. 24, 2016, the first day of next year's fall semester.
The event was created the same day one student was killed and another wounded in a shooting at Texas Southern University, and just days after other deadly shootings on campuses in Oregon and Arizona.

Why won't you guys just leave her alone and just let her pursue her studies in peace?
Do you not understand the meaning of the word "NO"?
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)using your logic, PP people are forcing abortion on those who find it morally an ethically repulsive for whatever reason. I'm sure neither of us believe that, but that sort of thinking does play well among Huckabee and Carson fans.
Are you accusing me, or other CCW holders, as violent predators? Statistically, we are more responsible and respectful for innocent life than the police. We aren't the problem. Remember, the nut cases who shot up a Colorado high school wrote essays on why there should be stricter gun laws, and their parents were Brady members. Perhaps they were too busy trying to take the rights way from other people to notice that their snowflakes were building bombs in the basement.
I respect her choice. However, it is only right and liberal, in the true sense of the word, to get the same from her.
stone space
(6,498 posts)She's saying "no" quite clearly.
Isn't that enough for you?
Just let her be.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)I'm not even in Texas. Nobody is trying to force anything on her. She is however trying to force something on others. Not forcing her to buy or carry one like Svalbard island, Norway, where the government actually enforces it and isn't a political statement like someplace in Georgia.
Here is a question, why are to trying to keep the freedom of choice from her room mate or one of her friends?

She has a right to say "no".
Nuclear Unicorn
(19,497 posts)Someone concealed carrying a gun is no more ramming it down her throat than her open carrying a dildo is ramming it down someone else's throat.
What other abstract threats are there? Does every car within driving range pose a threat? Every liquor store a threat of sexual assault? Every non-lifetime monogamous relationship a threat for STDs?
Go ahead, Stoney, keep her perfectly safe from every threat. Shield her, confine her, close her in from every danger.
Go for it you brave and valiant protector of this poor, besieged waif.
It was also Amanda Collins' right to say "Yes" but then the gun grabbers felt it better to see her beaten and raped because that is the world they prefer.

The truth is that IF you work at a State University you are under their dress code, and ethics code. YOU can be punished when in violation of either one. Your status as a teacher will not protect you, if you violate state law then you can be held responsible, If you violate the terms of your employment agreement then you can be punished for that, up to and including discharge with reason.

(6,185 posts)Not that accuracy or even basic honesty is essential in this debate but ...
Some of our control "fans" keep saying they don't allow guns in their building so they're "hypocrites".
But they have a range and an assortment of guns there too. As an instructor I get regular e-mailings offering rental discounts and encouraging use of their range at the NRA HQ building for anyone in the DC area.
I haven't seen much in the way of news of shootings at the museum or the range.

(363 posts)This thread fits neatly alongside the right's claims of Obama being a Islamofascist. Has the NRA beheaded anyone lately? Have they invaded several states in an attempt to set up the United States of the NRA? Destroyed the faces at Mr Rushmore?
Don't like it from the right as it usually indicates abandoning reason and facts and going full on irrational emotional fear baiting.
Don't like it from the left as it usually indicates abandoning reason and facts and going full on irrational emotional fear baiting.
So are terrorist claims the new Goodwins law (whoever playing the Hitler card is named after)?
No friend of the NRA and despite that this type of approach divides us farther apart on finding common ground as it signals there is no possibility of finding reasonable or reachable or effective compromises.
This is so far over the top I have to wonder if it's a false flag type of post from a NRA supporter trying to discredit gun controllers.
