An initiative that would decriminalize use and possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults was sent to the Legislature on Friday after the Secretary of States office certified it has more than enough signatures. A signature check by the State Elections Division, using a random sample, determined that sponsors had nearly 278,000 valid signatures, well in excess of the 241,153 required.
The initiative, I-502, would create a system of state-licensed growers, processors and stores, and impose a 25 percent excise tax at each stage. Those 21 and over could buy up to an ounce of dried marijuana; one pound of marijuana-infused product in solid form, such as brownies; or 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquids.

The Legislature now can do one of the following things: pass the pot decriminalization measure as is, reject or ignore the measure and let it go to the ballot in Nov., or pass an alternative to put on the ballot alongside the original..

(9,709 posts)Oh, I have a bowl ready here I'm going to do in a bit, but a recent poll shows I-502 only leading by 3%...and if the leaders of both major parties come out against the initiative, such as what happened in California to prop 19, then this is anything but a sure bet...
And of course if it does pass...then there are still the Feds..
