I was wondering recently why transgender acceptance has happened before cross-dressing acceptance

In other words, there was never a major movement of straight men who wanted to be public figures while cross dressing, like there are now people like Transgender Inside Edition reporter Zoey Tur.

Any thoughts? I could speculate but that's all it would be.

1. Is being a cross-dresser viewed as less legitimate than being transgender?

2. About the major medical intervention, do you mean that because medical intervention is expensive, the profit-motive has helped spur the societal acceptance?
