the exception of controlled-access roads aka freeways). Sleeping in rights-of-way is probably not an issue as long as you keep moving every day.

Who told you it was not legal? What was their argument? I think (or would hope) that walking should be one of the more straightforward means of transportation. I would think there would be much more discussion with other modes of travel, maybe like what the Amish do.

Seriously, it's legal to walk across the US, as long as you aren't trespassing on private property, or illegally on a public way such as a freeway.

Nobody living can ever stop me
as I go walking down freedom's highway
