Handcuffing of 9-year-old prompts probe of police practices

April 25, 2019

WASHINGTON (AP) — Video of a Washington, D.C., police officer chasing and handcuffing a 9-year-old boy on Monday has prompted a review of police practices.

Attorney General Karl A. Racine told news outlets Wednesday about the review into how the department deals with children. He says those practices will then be compared to other departments. The child wasn’t charged with a crime and was released into his mother’s custody.

The mother says her son was leaning against a car and the officer asked him to move. She says her son then called the officer a slur and fled. Police say an internal investigation is ongoing.

Last month, another officer detained a 10-year-old boy later determined to have been wrongfully accused of armed robbery. Chief Peter Newsham says that launched an internal procedure review.

What are the police academies teaching officers about interacting with children ?

I am fed up with reading about cops slamming children to the floor/concrete, kicking/punching them in the head and torso, treating them like they are hardened career criminals. Disproportionately, these are children of color.

If you're a LEO reading this, STOP IT. If you see it, STOP IT. Then report it. Get these thugs off the force. Screw the Blue Line. The damage you are doing to American's children is destroying them. Would you want the children in YOUR family treated this way ?

THIS SHIT HAS GOT TO STOP.

Oldest was 15, youngest was 9. These are just children, FFS, Not hardened career criminals.

I'm tired of the Blue Line nonsense. If you're a LEO and you see something like this STOP IT. SPEAK UP. TELL YOUR SGT. BUT STOP IT.

This is getting entirely out of hand. And we must speak up every time our children are abused in this fashion.

THIS SHIT HAS GOT TO STOP.
