New York "stop and frisk" trial set for March 2013

By Basil Katz
NEW YORK | Mon Aug 27, 2012 6:32pm EDT

(Reuters) - The broadest legal challenge to the New York Police Department's controversial crime-fighting tactic known as "stop and frisk" will head to trial in March, a U.S. judge ruled on Monday.

The case stems from a class action lawsuit filed in 2008 by four black men claiming they were improperly targeted by police because of their race.

U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan granted class action status to the lawsuit in March, saying the plaintiffs had established their cases were emblematic of a city-wide problem.

At Monday's hearing, the judge said the case had dragged on long enough and noted that the March 18, 2013 trial would be more than five years since the case was first filed.

I hope the case both stops the program and provides some kind of compensation to the people who were targeted.

This is so blatently unconstitutional and I don't see how anyone can justify this violation of the 4th Amendment.

I forgot about them.
There is actually a DU member, whose name shall not be mentioned, that wholeheartedly supports and defends this practice.
You probably know who it is.

I'm pretty sure the people who thought this shit up are the same kinds of people who shoot up Sikh temples thinking they are Muslims (that's on the same level of stupidity as blowing up a white southern Baptist church because you thought they were Jewish).

As we used to say to the girls in my high school (post 9/11), "Take off your clothes or the terrorists win!"
--Part to show how stupid the knee-jerk anti-Muslim histeria was, part because we were 16-year-old boys
