Emil Seidel elected mayor Milwaukee 1st socialist mayor of major city in US During his administration the first public works department was established, the first fire and police commissions were organized, and a city park system came into being. 
In 1912, the Socialist Party nominated Emil Seidel as their vice presidential candidate to run with Eugene Debs. http://bit.ly/XhONKQ
