- "How Hearst Made Modern Media." No man reshaped news and media to the same extent as William Randolph Hearst. A man with a larger-than-life personality, he filled his newspapers with drama & hyperbole, & transformed the news we view today. PBS, American Experience, Aug. 2021.
(WATCH "Citizen Hearst" Full Documentary (2021) : https://to.pbs.org/3yhHK9o | #CitizenHearstPBS).
- In the 1930s, William Randolph Hearsts media empire included 28 newspapers, a movie studio, a syndicated wire service, radio stations & 13 magazines. Nearly one in 4 American families read a Hearst publication. His newspapers were so influential that Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini & Winston Churchill all wrote for him. The first practitioner of what is now known as synergy, Hearst used his media stronghold to achieve unprecedented political power, then ran for office himself.
After serving 2 terms in Congress, he came in second in the balloting for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1904. Perhaps best known as the inspiration for Orson Welles film, "Citizen Kane" (1941) & his lavish castle in San Simeon, Hearst died in 1951 at the age of 88, having transformed the medias role in American life & politics.
*The 2-part, 4-hour film is based on historian David Nasaws critically acclaimed biography, The Chief: The Life of William Randolph Hearst.

__________
- William Randolph Hearst Sr. (April 29, 1863 Aug. 14, 1951) was an American businessman, newspaper publisher, and politician known for developing the nation's largest newspaper chain and media company, Hearst Communications. His flamboyant methods of yellow journalism influenced the nation's popular media by emphasizing sensationalism and human interest stories. Hearst entered the publishing business in 1887 with Mitchell Trubitt after being given control of The San Francisco Examiner by his wealthy father, Senator George Hearst.
Moving to New York City, Hearst acquired the New York Journal and fought a bitter circulation war with Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. Hearst sold papers by printing giant headlines over lurid stories featuring crime, corruption, sex, and innuendo. Acquiring more newspapers, Hearst created a chain that numbered nearly 30 papers in major American cities at its peak. He later expanded to magazines, creating the largest newspaper and magazine business in the world. Hearst controlled the editorial positions and coverage of political news in all his papers and magazines, and thereby often published his personal views. He sensationalized Spanish atrocities in Cuba while calling for war in 1898 against Spain. Historians, however, reject his subsequent claims to have started the war with Spain as overly extravagant..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Randolph_Hearst
