YUM! Forget bread stuffing, cranberries and potatoes, game birds. Venison and meat pies were the norm as well as clams and mussels, etc.

I always taught my First Graders about the real first Thanksgiving and we voted (we voted on everything...partly civics/partly they loved doing it) for our favorite foods. The seafood entree was always a winner. No fruit pies for dessert...not so much.

2. In light of hard winter they suffered

During the first winter, 4 whole families were wiped out by a lack of food, weather and illness but thanks to their alliance with the Wampanoag they were able to celebrate. Remember that Thanksgiving was actually the SECOND harvest following their treaty setup by Samoset and Squanto with the native tribe in the patuxet region.

3. Yep, the Indians showed them how to farm, hunt, fish,

build shelter, etc. The pilgrims came here with few skills except for shop keeping and a few skills for English food gathering. They would have starved if it weren't for the indians. They even showed the pilgrims that is you stick a fish head in the dirt with a few seeds the plant would be better. I read tons of books to my First Graders....I wonder how much they remembered, if any.

My great, great, great .....ancestor came over on the ship after the Mayflower. They settled in the Phila and NJ area.
