Why isn't there more enthusiasm for anothe civil war?

As a civil society, we're a little bit past the notion of using violence to solve our problems. Oh, a few antisocial cranks pop up here and there, but the overall flow of events is leading away from violence. And not just in the US... globalization and international trade are making wars between connected states increasingly unlikely. The idea of a major war between world powers is almost unthinkable today. The only places wars occur are in societies that are disconnected from the rest of the globalized commerce & communication among nations.

A good start for understanding this is the book "The Pentagon's New Map" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pentagon's_New_Map for a short overview)

3. Because we are grownups, and because the last Civil War cost so many lives and took so long to get

over. Parts of the country still aren't over that last civil war, and it has been over 100 years since it ended.

War doesn't really solve problems. It just creates new ones. And it wastes a lot of resources including human resources.

What kind of war are you envisioning here? A left vs. right contest a la the Spanish Civil War? Because I'd be quite disappointed in anybody on either side who had enthusiasm for such a thing.

Let's put aside the tremendous body count, but the first one, even with its limited technology, still saw Atlanta, Savannah, Charleston, and Richmond destroyed and burned to the ground. Now you want to add aircraft, tanks, and cruise missles? How many cities and towns will be destroyed and how many people KILLED by major fighting in heavily populated areas?
