Related: About this forumI have only one simple rule for my cats.
They can go anywhere they want, basically do anything they want, but they are not allowed on the kitchen counters or the dining room table EVER and I don't play. One day, my previous cat, Boots, was lying on the dining room table and I walked by and didn't see her so she had the audacity to meow as if to say "Look where I am!" I said what I always say "Have you lost your mind? GET DOWN NOW!" and it was always my tone of voice that compelled her to get down immediately. But, of course, being a cat, she had to test me from time to time.
Imagine my shock and utter dismay when I came home from work one day and found Martini sitting in the dish drainer! I almost had a stroke. I knew she jumped up on the stove behind my back because I occasionally found black fur on it, but I never knew she made herself at home in the dish drainer where I put my dishes to dry! So I went to Target and got a plastic storage bin and now I keep it over the dish drainer. She hasn't jumped up there in years (as far as I know) but I still keep it there just in case.

(2,286 posts)In fact, I keep her ashes on one of the shelves of the TV table at my mother's suggestion. She said that Boots spent so much time hanging out there, she may as well rest there.
Holly jumps up there from time to time. She'll walk around the TV, make sure everything's okay on the ground and then jump down. She's like the security guard of the TV on patrol. I've never seen Martini jump up there; I guess its not as alluring as the dish drainer.

(22,029 posts)and a neighbor came out to ask for one of her recipes. They went back to my neighbor's house and there on the kitchen table was her cat sound asleep. My neighbor was shocked and said he has never done that. The other neighbor said - yes he does - he does that every day after you leave for your walk!!

(464 posts)Our cats, who never got on the kitchen counter during daytime hour and when we up and about, somehow, their very long distinctively colored hair would be on the counter in the morning. I think they got up there and just had to scratch and groom, roll all over the counter. I learned over 54 years ago to not leave butter out on the counter, even covered they got to it. The worst was when I started chopping vegetables, and cat hair would start flying around.
