Seeds You've Started

Tell about the seeds you've started.

Back on Febr. 10, I started a large tray of peppers. Unfortunately I did not put them on my warming seed mat because I was using it to keep pipes from freezing. (In retrospect, I would have been better off using it on the peppers--didn't really need it for the pipes.)

I put the mat under the peppers about a week ago and they have finally sprouted. They absolutely need that warmth. In fact, here's a temperature guideline for seeds:

You can find other germination degree tables if your seeds aren't on this one. I used the search term germination temperature seeds.

Today (3/6) it's cold out so I'm devoting the rest of the day to planting seeds in one-inch cubes, 280 to a tray. I hope to do about four of them, or around 1100 more seeds in addition to the 280 pepper plants.

In addition, I bought another warming mat, so I'm good to go!

I think I'm just going to go for all nursery plants this year, except for the melons.

I'm definitely bookmarking that link!

I have a deep sill on a south facing kitchen window, and that's where I put a lot of the seeds I start. I buy aluminum cake pans, with the clear plastic lids, from the Dollar Tree and use those as mini greenhouses. I also have 2 little indoor greenhouses and I've installed lights in those, so once I really get rumbling along with the peas, beans and squash, I'll be putting those to good use.

If I could find San Marzano tomato seeds, I'd probably not have to buy a single plant, this year, but alas - all I can find is regular Roma. Fortunately, the locally owned plant nursery, down the road, always have the plants. I made the most amazing Marinara Sauce, last Summer. This year I will make much more and freeze some, instead of eating it all!

20 types of lettuce, some other greens, daylilies, larkspur...

Going to be selling veggie starts locally, as usual, so my aim is for about 2000-3000 seedlings.

I use 50 cell plug flats, seed up to 50 seeds per cell - so in a 1 by 2 foot area can have up to 2500 plants (then comes the fun of transplanting). It's the only way I can do what I do, since I have no greenhouse.
