I never saw one like that before! Almost looks like a peony.

I have never had luck with hollyhocks.

When I was a kid we had one growing at the corner of the porch. It was kind of a deep pink color and had single blooms, but it was one of my favorites.

About 10 years ago my sister and I bought hollyhock seeds for the yard of a new house we moved into. We had filled all flower beds and veggie beds with mushroom compost and everything went crazy. Unfortunately the next year hollyhocks were coming up everywhere! We ended up treating them like weeds and, after several years, thought we were done with them. Last spring...one popped up! It is now gone, we didn't dare let it go to seed.
If mine looked like that, though, I might give one another chance.

When I was a little girl Mom showed me how to make a doll with a bud, a full bloom and a toothpick. I had dolls for a day with many colors of skirts.

Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.

The buds were the heads.

This must be something from the 1930's depression, when Mom was just the right age to be interested in dolls.

For the nice comments. It didn't bloom last year and the ond that did was a disappointing white.

I'm very happy about these.

So now the heat is really hard on them.

I transplanted the hollyhocks from last year over to the big new garden. I am amazed that they are a different color from last year. There's some bright pinks still, but also a nice cream color. I've planted some new colors that I'm quite interested to see how they turn out, like chestnut.

Even though they were supposed to be pink. These colors are a nice surprise.

My neighbor told me he's planning on hollyhocks for next year. I'll have to tell him about this one.
