Related: About this forumwhat do you call this hose?
I want to look it up, but I don't know what it is called, but I'm sure there must be such a thing--
I have a rain barrel in my garden,
I want something that will pull water from the rain barrel, thru a hose, that I can put into a water can, or directly on the garden.
Is Possible?

(8,170 posts)Make sure the barrel is raised a little
Cut a length of hose about 2X the length from rim to ground.
Immerse in the water to fill the whole hose
Take one end and whilst it is still submerged plug it with your thumb before lifting out of the water leaving the other end in.
Keep the plugged end plugged outside the barrel until it is well below the water level inside the barrel.
Put your watering can beneath the hose, remove your thumb and hey, presto! you are siphoning the water.

Should I have put it on something, so that the bottom would be higher than the surrounding ground?
(too late now, as I have filled it.)

(8,170 posts)as long as the outlet is about 9" to 1' below the upper water level you'll be fine

since I have little money, or expertise in making things, I was really thinking of the method that intaglio described.
I will give it a try.
