Are these Rose Hips?...

I posted this in the Lounge and was directed here for better luck. Femmocrat suggested it looked like Rose Hips and from what I can see on the net I think she may be right. What do you guys think?

After just posting about the edible berries here a few mins ago I was reminded of coming across a bunch of bushes along a trail with some very strange fruit on them. Luckily I took a pic while I was there. These are bright red bulbous looking fruit / berries about 2 inches across.



Anyone ever seen something like this before?

1. Yes indeedy - rose hips - loaded with vitamin C!

the old thorny shrub roses produce big hips - modern hybrids not really at all.

I might do some more looking / research before trying one off the bush as I don't want to poison myself by mistake But this looks pretty unique so it's probably exactly what it is, and I don't think BC has any really poisonous berries / fruit anyway. Well not wild growing. I know there are a few very poisonous plants but they don't produce fruit for the most part.

Peppers are much happier than tomatoes! Will give a check tomorrow - could be one nearly there - and lots of peppers to toss in!

except some seeds. I'd love to grow a batch of them, if seeds are all you can do . They just look gorgeous!

unless you have different roses where you live.

7. Yes, that's what they are. You can use them in a salad.

8. rose hips are delicious

and they make a wonderful jam. however, i was cautioned to pick them after the first frost to kill andy little worms or other invasive organisms in the hips. or, i guess you could pick the juiciest ones before the critters eat them all and freeze them for a day or so.
