Mystery tomatoes.... ???

I posted last week about being unable to find six-packs of tomato plants. I found some today at a local hardware store. Only problem is that they are not labeled. LOL But.... they were only $1.99 for six! (I bought a dozen.) I also bought six hot cherry peppers. There wasn't much left except celery and some over-grown cabbages and cauliflowers.

I'll bet most of you are well on your way and done planting by now. I got a late start due to unforeseen circumstances.

1. Nice to know I'm not the only procrastinator

My excuses are that we don't really get tomato-suitable weather here until September and that we had an unseasonable cool spell most of May.

But most of the tomatoes are in, the squash will go in this weekend. I did get the watering system set up, and the cat is on gopher patrol (which consists of him sleeping in the garden: it annoys the rodents).

2. It has been very chilly here too.

We had a couple of mornings in the low 40s this week (PA). That's true, we don't get really good tomatoes until Sept. The first ones come in August.

I will still plant cucumber and pumpkin seeds this week.... when the soil dries out. Then I'm quitting for this year.

3. Eh, so long as they're not cherry tomatoes it will be a good harvest.

A six pack of cherry tomatoes, now that would get interesting. When I was new to gardening I planted a six pack of yellow pear tomatoes. That was

4. Been there!

Those yellow pear tomatoes are truly prolific! I was sending baskets of them to my husband's workplace where they were appreciated. I don't plant them anymore! They even came up wild and overgrew my heirlooms.

I think it's kind of fun to see what comes up, though. I hope they are red ones. I planted six yellow tomatoes already because that was all I could find about a week ago at K-mart.

5. the biggie is that they will be edible and likely delicious (as all home grown produce is).

the fun will be the mystery part! Test me....let's see if I can name it once you begin to get ripe ones!

Oh... this is cool.... I found three Pineapple tomatoes and a Black Prince on the clearance rack! Those are both new ones for me.

7. Black Prince is a cutie.

I grew it for a couple of years and it produced an abundant amount of smallish fruit.
I'm growing a "Hawaiian Pineapple" this year.

Clearance rack tomatoes... another adventure. One year I bought three plants at the end of season and only one was the variety on the tag. All three were tagged as big fruiting heirlooms but one was a Roma and another was 6-8 oz. generic red tomato.
