Volunteers in the lawn

Does anyone know the best way to get rid of tree volunteers in their grass lawn? We have a zillion trees in my neighborhood and I want to get rid of the volunteers that I invariably get in spring. I know that mowing takes care of some, but is there some kind of systemic potion that I can put on the lawn. I don't want to kill the lawn!

but I don't have a lot of knowledge of chemicals. What kind of trees are coming up? Are they first year/coming from seed?

All I know to do is what I do....I have oak trees that put out a profusion of acorns, which all the squirrels "plant" for me, as well as some maples with all the thousands of helicopters with seeds. I hand pick them as soon as I see them, before they take hold, but that is work.

I used to periodically pull very young tree seedlings from my lawn where I lived before. If you get them early, they come right out.
