Other than ceramic, what type of floors can be heated?

Ceramic seems a little too unforgiving. I want to reduce the need for heat (I have oil) and thought that beefing up my insulation and installing heated flooring (it needs to be refinished or replaced anyway) and I am looking for options.

I have pets, and my elderly father lives with me and *refuses* to use a cane even though he needs one.(the other reason I am a bit leery or ceramic...what if he falls?)

What do you think?

2. I lived in a house where that stuff was under the carpet even.

Took forever to bring the house to temperature, but once there it seemed it wasn't going to get cold for anything.

3. Really? I think that might be awesome during a cold winter.

I used to work in property management and can tell you first hand that turning your ac on and off in the summer is WAY more expensive than if you just turned it on and ran it continuously.

I wonder if this isn't the same case with radiant heating under carpet.

My house is tiny, and I want to beef up the insulation and perhaps add heated flooring as a means to offset the need for oil heat.
