Cakes came as mixes and when my age got into double digits, I was the one tasked with making them.

I vaguely remember making an angel food cake when I was on my own, beating all those egg whites with a hand held mixer. It was not fun even though the cake turned out OK (didn't have th proper pan, used a Sally Lunn bread poan) and I put it into the same category as puff pastry----great to know what kind of effort goes into it, great to know how to produce it at home during a blizzard, but a decent bakery would do a creditable job on either.

I suppose RA is my own excuse. I have a stand mixer and am quite willing to do other baking, breads and cakes. I jhust balk at anything that requires me to use my hands extensively.
