Weight Loss/Maintenance
Related: About this forumDrugs to help lose weight
As i'm diabetic and about 70lbs overweight my endocrinologist prescribed a drug called Victosa, the first month oddly enough i gained 10lbs now after 6 months i've given up the Victosa and i've now lost 10lbs. Odd reaction to a drug thats supposed to help you lose weight. its also very expensive as it comes in injectable pens, they run $100 each and you go through 1 a week, without insurance covering 80% i could never afford such a drug..
Any one got any weight loss drugs that worked for them?
Yeah i know i should eat less but thats a little harder to accomplish than you may think.

(285 posts)I work at a gym, and I see all shapes, sizes and approaches to weight loss over the last few years. I have learned one thing, and that is aside from surgery there are no safe short cuts. You have to eat better foods, you must increase your physical activity. It is that simple, and it is not quick for most people. But it is better in the long run. And when you think about it further, it is better to learn a new way of living and eating that won't wind up making you sicker or causing heart problems, because isn't the whole point of losing weight to be healthier and happier?

(797 posts)Cant argue with your logic. And i thought giving up smoking was tough, its nothing compared to giving up the addiction of over eating..

(285 posts)I quit smoking six years ago. I had the patch on for three weeks, then white knuckled it! Even with daily access to a gym I am currently struggling with a 10 pound issue, mainly because I like my own cooking...way too much!

(21,957 posts)is pretty much just as harmful as their habit of smoking. Second hand eating, however, is not nearly as bad as second hand smoke.

(14,489 posts)I had been doing well with eating healthy and working out, but as I started getting more exercise, my appetite skyrocketed. It became extremely hard to resist eating later in the evening a couple hours after dinner, and fruit or other "healthy" choices didn't ease the cravings. The phentermine helped take the edge off the cravings so I could resist and stay within the appropriate calorie levels to start losing again.

(4 posts)According to me you should take balance diet and do exercise to lose your weight loss. I can understand it is a little hard for you because you are diabetic. But both ways are safe. If you have decided to take weight loss drug, there are numerous products are available in the market. My advice is for you to take complete information about that product like Ingredients, good, bad etc. before using it. And also consult with your doctor.

(8,584 posts)I've been on Weight Watchers Online since April 2011. Since that time, I've lost 39 pounds. I started taking Qsymia in November. My weight loss since then has not been dramatic, but I just asked for an increase in the dosage and started taking the new dosage on Sunday. The difference in hunger management is amazing. I'll report back at the end of the week to let you know how my weight loss has been.

(8 posts)Any drug will have its side effects sooner or later. Loosing weight with help of drugs is not good for body. The best and simplest way to loose weight is to switch to raw food diet.
Raw food diet is anything that is raw. Ideally, fresh fruits and vegetables. A great thing about it is that its devilishly simple to get started. You can begin by eating more fruits and vegetables today.
On a raw food diet you can eat massive amounts of food while still maintaining a healthy weight. Most vegetables contain very little calories but are high in important nutrients. Its the best of both worlds; you get more nutritional content and a tighter body.
Its definitely the way to go.

(95,337 posts)Qsymia is basically Phentermine (the safe part of the old Fen-Phen) with Topiramate, another well established anti-seisure drug which is know to help curb appetite. Both drugs have been out on the market on a very long time so the side effects are very well documented. I started back in September and the worst I can say is that I was a bit wired/anxious at first. I always had issues with anything with 'speed' in it (Phentremine is a relative of the Meth family but extremely mild). The biggest thing I had to do was basically stop drinking coffe and also NOT take the medicine every single day.
My doctor was smart and started me on the absolutely lowest dosage and I started to lose weight almost immediately. Even though my prescription insurance company wanted me to move up in prescription size my doctor helped me to fight back and say that as long as I was losing on lower dosage I preferred staying there (I'm on the 11.5 right now). I'd rather stay at the lower and learn to eat healther and so far that is working for me. Ironically I have had friends prescribed Phentermine and their doctors start them at 37.5 which is the highest dosage you can go and that is just crazy. You will get acclimated and after that you are stuck.
I see Qsymia the way a smoker would see Chantrix. I had an addiction to junk food that I couldn't curb. Qsymia helped me to get over the cravings so I could focus on the better habits. Seven months latter I eat healthier, I do not go to fast food restaurants, eat processed foods and read food lables like crazy. I won't touch anything with artificial sweeteners in them or High Fructose Corn Syrup. My Chlosterol is down, my Blood Pressure is down and my over health is just so much better.
I ended up paying $50/month for the prescription but like I said earlier I wasn't taking it everyday (would get too wired) and also I was spending less on food so in the end it worked out fine cost wise. Qsymia also has some cost-savings programs.
Adding prescription weight loss pills are serious steps to take (do NOT bother with over the counter - might as well just burn your might in a fire) but they will work only if you change your eating habits and start to exercise and make regular trips to doctor to monitor your health. If you don't change your eating habits the weight will come back on when you stop taking the pills but I will say this much - feels great shopping in the misses department again

(2,312 posts)When I feel hungry I tell myself that what I'm feeling is me, getting thinner! And imagining how happy I'll feel next morning when I look in the mirror.
As I've gotten older, the excess settles in my middle to a scary extent. Since I am short, just a few pounds makes me look alarmingly pregnant (and I'm 64, so you know THAT ain't happening).

(6,211 posts)Ive taken Saxenda,Wegovy,Ozempic, and Monjauro. Ive had success with all of them. Saxenda is a daily injection. The others are weekly. I prefer the weekly injections.
I am excited about all the research about GLP-1 receptor angonists and new meds coming down the pike.
I am glad that other companies are making similar drugs, that will eventually bring the cost down.
I have zero shame in taking meds for weight loss. To each his own.
