Weight Loss/Maintenance
Related: About this forumGoing Vegan
After a lifetime of the basic North American diet i'm left at 66yrs old fat sick and nearly dead.100lbs overweight, diabetic, mobility issues and a couple of cheese burgers away from a heart attack, As with most people i know breakfast ,lunch and dinner consisted basically of some form of meat smothered in cheese wrapped in white bread usually accompanied with deep fried potatoes and a mug of fizzy sugar water,
About a month ago i tripped over a PBS infomercial by a Dr Joel Fuhrman espousing the benefits of a plant based dietary lifestyle,i figured i got nothing to lose so i bought the book and have now become a vegan,
To date i've lost 15lbs,cut my diabetic medications in half and generally have much more energy.
Any one else derived improved health by going to a more vegetable based dietary lifestyle?

(17,276 posts)I am now 62. I lost 15 lbs, gained a lot of energy, improved my borderline diabetes, have kept cholesterol in check. I also exercise regularly and that's how i stay young!
The first book i read was Neal Barnard's. Then Fuhrman, Ornish, McDougall, etc. The China Study, Whitewashed, and Healthy at 100.
It's a good life.

We are brainwashed from the time we are little. Must eat plenty of protein with every meal. Must eat plenty of dairy. Then we develop a taste for it all. Once i stopped eating it my taste for heathy stuff revived.
