Texas Abortion Limits Struck Down by U.S. Supreme Court

A divided U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas abortion restrictions that had threatened to close three-quarters of the states clinics by putting new requirements on facilities and doctors.
The 5-3 ruling is the courts first abortion decision in almost a decade. It invalidates a law that required clinics to meet hospital-like surgical standards and forced abortion doctors to get admitting privileges at a local hospital.
Texas said the rules safeguarded patient safety, while opponents said the real aim was to reduce access to abortion.
The law provides "few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an undue burden on their constitutional right to do so," Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court.
