Hernia surgery.

My son told us yesterday that he is having hernia surgery Monday. I think he wants us to stay as unconcerned as possible.

A friend is driving him there and bringing him home. He works from home these days, lives by himself with two cats.

Of course they don't let people hang around hospital waiting rooms these days. We are high risk as well.

We will stay in touch with him and help out if he needs anything. We are ninety miles away from him. My brother lives closer, only a few miles away.

I am his mom, so I worry. Has anyone here had hernia repair?

1. Nothing to worry about, especially if he is otherwise healthy

Full recovery can take a few weeks

Hopefully they will let him have one night in the hospital to recover, and would suggest no meaningful activity for at least a week or two

I had an umbilical hernia repair almost 30 years ago. Pretty sore for a couple of weeks and couldn't lift much but all in all, it went well. I went home the same day.

4. I had an inguinal hernia repair

That was in 2009.

There was some pain with the procedure which was done as an outpatient.

I'm not sure that was the best way to do it in my case, as I have other pre-existing health problems but I managed to get through it.

Hopefully, they've refined the procedure a bit since 2009.

I would try not to worry, esp. if it is being done as an outpatient.

5. I had the same experience as yonder

Umbilical hernia surgery to repair a bout an inch diameter hole. They used a mesh insert. Did the procedure laparoscopically as an out patient. Can’t really say how long it took me to heal since I had my gall bladder removed 1 week later - same surgeon as a lap outpatient. I was healed from both in 6 weeks.

I know about worrying! I told my kids I’ll still be worrying about them when I’m 100.

6. Most are done as out patient today.

My Son went home as soon as he was awake, still woozy. 6 weeks no lifting. Should be fine.

8. My live in nurse says that

it might be a problem for someone that smokes a lot or is obese. Other than that, it is more dangerous to not have the surgery.

9. My husband had it and it was the easiest of operations.

He was up and around shortly after getting home from the hospital and went to work the next day.

10. Went in at 7 AM, out by 11AM. Went immediately to a restaurant to eat. Back to work in 3 days.

The surgeon I went to told me he has complications in only 1 of 200 operations, and that is usually the patch failing or migrating, moving out of the right position.

15 years later, the area is still tender, occasionally I have some pain there, but it is shortlived and not very intense.

11. He is doing very well.

We offered to go to his house. He says he went grocery shopping the day before surgery and he is doing fine. I think he does not want us hovering, so I will leave him alone for now.

My brother talked to him. So did his sister. Everything seems fine.
