I've got a challenging evening coming up this Thursday

It's called "Gin & Jazz" and it's a fundraiser for the Detroit Sympony. I just hate these kinds of events where the booze will be flowing and I won't know anybody there. My wife loves to meet new people and she's perfectly comfortable in situations like this. I've been sober for 5 1/2 years and almost never think about booze and am never really tempted to drink. But I know I'll be looking at my watch the whole evening. And I won't feel comfortable until I'm in bed with a bowl of ice cream watching a good movie.

Wish me luck!

and easy to laugh. So I get high on their alcohol buzz. I'm sensitive so it works for me.

It's my reward not drinking. I've been doing it every night for several years now. Keeps me sober.

After about ten years had to slow down on the ice cream. Triglycerides skyrocketed. Added a few belt sizes. Now its maybe twice a week. Going on seventeen years and yes, it is rewarding!!

The ice cream AND the sobriety.

A few weeks ago I went to a class reunion with a friend of mine - and it turns out I didn't know anyone, either. I had a chat with someone's husband who didn't know anyone either - and since there was an extensive bar, I told him I was in AA, so he shared the details of how he makes his own beer.

I assumed there'd be coffee, since most people drink that, but all I could find was the bar. So I finally spoke to a friendly waitress and she brought me a cup of coffee from the kitchen. Wishing you much better luck!

I'm sure there will be plenty of gin-based cocktails on offer (as the Brits say). I'll just have my usual soda water on the rocks with a lime twist.

I hope it is more comfortable than you expect and there are interesting people you can talk with. Personally, I still need an escape plan for something like this. I hope as I get further along in my sobriety it gets easier.

My wife was the social butterfly--she loves meeting new people. And she got moderately hammered. I stood by myself for the better part of the evening and listened to the band. It was a friend of mine's group so I talked to him between sets. Fortunately, we got to leave at around 9:30-ish, so that was good. Thank god I don't have to attend these kinds of things very often.
