I was the only adult not drinking at our Easter dinner this evening.

And I managed to get through it unscathed! I thought about sneaking a drink a couple times. But I stayed as far away from the bar as I could the whole time. That helped.

I hang with are normally very kind but I enjoy it when they go to the nth degree with it. And I enjoy their laughter. And it makes me laugh too. I just expect that and it helps me enjoy while staying sober. Dream about it and then you'll feel actualized when it happens.

I had to choose between my sobriety and my friends. I chose wisely.

Still…

EDIT: Didn’t mean to sound like I think you’ll fail. I don’t. I was just moaning that I couldn’t do it without cutting everyone loose. Because, even after 25 years, I just can’t be sober around people who are drinking. (Oddly, I do just fine with pot heads…lol.)

I’m really trying to get out of the cocktails-every-night ritual, and decided April would be dry. A few had a wine toast at family dinner, but oddly half decided to stick with soda or coffee. We all drove a fair distance so perhaps that was the reason, but none seemed to miss it.

(for booze, that is. I've been done with everything else; pills, coke, cigarettes for many years now.)

Whenever I get the urge to drink, I just think of how much time I wasted being...well, wasted!

...and, how much time I may have left.

drinks are growing. It is really nice and I am not wanting any alcohol. You're doing great. I found going to AA really helped. I went for months not years. One bit of advice hit me there and I knew I would never drink again.

The bane of my existence was always Cousin Asshole who just graduated from bartending school and took it as a personal affront that I didn't drink alcohol. I was lucky in that I didn't want the stuff, it was all pain and no party for me. Telling him that learning all the variations of the Shirley Temple was going to be necessary to his career didn't help, but it made me feel better.

Friends of mine who are also friends of Bill tell me that it gets easier over time. I know it's easier now that I'm old than it was when I was in my 20s. I can still admire people whose brains are screaming for that first drink and who override it because they just can't do that to themselves and their friends and families any more.

You did good. You didn't drink today and that's all anybody ever asks of you.

Don't know why I'm in the Addiction group but I just wanted to say that two of Jesus's last words were "I thirst."
Mostly I'm here because the DU monitor algorithm demands that I post more frequently so that they will allow me to e-mail the fabulous cartoons to my friends. Congratulations and Carry on!

It's nice to hear all the supportive comments here. Between the support I get from attending SMART meetings and visiting here, it makes it easier to stay clean. 3 1/2 years or so off booze and going strong!

I have been sober for over 20 years after consuming several lifetimes of alcohol. I loved being drunk until after being sober for a while. I have been totally over it for a long, long time. I woke up with a hangover one day and decided that I was done with alcohol and cigarettes. I quit both cold turkey. I was probably one nasty bastard for a while. I continued my relationships with the people I drank with and it disturbed them to no end that I would no longer drink with them. "Oh, come on, Steve, one beer is not going to hurt you."

People will continue to try to push alcohol on you, but apparently you have figured out how to handle it. Good for you!

My family did an intervention, so they're totally supportive. My wife's family knows I don't drink, so there's no pressure there. And I don't really have any heavy drinking friends. Plus I never hung around bars. All that makes it easier to lay off the sauce.

I do miss the warm buzz you get from alcohol, but it's just not worth all the bullshit that goes along with it.
