Addiction & Recovery
Related: About this forumRough night last night.
We had friends over for dinner. Sitting out on the patio on a warm night really made me want to have some wine along with everyone else. I've been clean for two years now, and I haven't had any major urges in a while. Then I thought how the evening would have progressed in the past. I would have gotten buzzed. Then, after our friends left and my wife went to bed, I would continue drinking until I got super hammered and would pass out in front of the tv. So instead, I did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen while they were outside. I came out and sat with them from time to time, figuring they really wouldn't notice I wasn't there. And the conversations were somewhat wine fueled, which can be pretty boring if you're not drinking. So I got through it unscathed. Whew!

(5,266 posts)I shy away from most group circumstances involving cocktails. Or even dinners with wine. The conversations never seem to be very interesting.
Congratulations on your present life!

(6,088 posts)I stayed with some folks who drank wine every day. They got tipsy, but not necessarily drunk. Just talked louder and louder, got cranked up--every evening. If it was a bad day, they commiserated; if it was a good day, they celebrated with wine. Every evening.
After a few evenings of it, it got pretty boring. I wondered if that was normal behavior for the wine drinking class.
Your post suggests I am not alone - thanks.
Congrats for keeping it together.

(15,909 posts)I'm in a 12 step program. Not had a drink in almost 17 years. Do you have anyone you can call in case things get, you know, weird? Sometimes talking with someone else helps those feelings pass.

Yeah - I get that. I drink alot, but I just sorta sip all day, never really getting a "buzz", but my friends all seem to wanna "catch up" and drink what I drink in a day within a couple of hours.
I'm the same with weed (it's legal here ya know ) - just a puff or two now and then, not bowl after bowl, joint after joint to the point where ur train of thought keeps getting derailed . . .
Anyhoo - congrats on your success with the "battle"
