Ripper Street on Netflix

It kept showing up on the home page and I kept avoiding this series. Anything to do with Jack the Ripper fails to interest me. Then I noticed that there are five seasons. So I figured to give a look at the first episode.

I'm up to Season 3 and trying not to dash through it. I watch a couple of episodes every few days. None of the individual actors intrigues me. But together they do a great job. The atmosphere is rich with character. The stories are varied about social issues and the latest technology of the era. It's clear why the series lasted for five seasons.

2. I enjoyed the series.

The design team got the look of 1890s London beautifully.
Being an amateur student of Egyptology, I did catch a mistake, though. In the last season, an episode takes place backstage in a theater. Prominently displayed in the background of several scenes is a copy of the famous polychrome bust of Nefertiti.
This artifact wasn't to be discovered for another twenty or so years.

3. Did you know the show is filmed in Dublic - London no longer has a Victorian area big enough

to film in. Dublin was the closest city that kept a Victorian era area.

5. Didn't know that.

I've always wanted to visit England. The family was there for a while when we emigrated from Hungary, but I have no memory of it. Of course, that was 1956 and I was only six at the time!

8. Now I have to see it

See if I recognize places from my one visit there. Probably a good segue when I finish up with Peaky Blinders.

4. I did two J.t R. tours from London Walking Tours. Both were different.

It's kind of spooky, I did both of them in November. Sunset is around 4:30. The tours end around 9:30 in an area of London that has few people after dark.

6. The name is really misleading

The series really has little to do with Jack the Ripper. I guess other than it's supposed to be set in the area where he roamed etc. They do make references to him (past tense) and if I remember right the older head police officer had been obsessed with solving that case. But other than that, it's not about him. It would be too bad if the title put people off watching it.

I liked the series too. Some things in the later episodes get a little far fetched, but it is still worth watching and well done I think.

7. I agree about the later episodes

I'm into Season 4 and wondered if the writer changed to someone new. It's hard to comment without spoilers so I'll leave it at that my favorite stories are the earlier ones.
