(33,643 posts)Practically everything is available streaming if you have the proper subscription ... what services do you have?

(26,730 posts)They all offer different services. I have been vastly enjoying People of Earth on Amazon.
I do not have a regular TV, which would tend to affect what I'm aware of.

(106,399 posts)I have a 30-day free trial to Acorn right now, which you can access through Amazon Prime or Roku or many other services as well. They also have some great Australian series.
Whether it is police dramas (Line of Duty), quirky but addictive medical comedies shot in a gorgeous location (Doc Martin), Australian and British period dramas (A Place to Call Home, Foyle's War) or the scores of mysteries there are plenty to binge-watch.
On the same score, if you already subscribe to Amazon Prime and want to stay with their included content, there are 23 seasons of a British show called SILENT Witness about forensic pathologists that obviously has been well received forever and is very well done. Did you miss Downton Abbey?--watch it all now on Prime. The Man on the High Castle was original series on Prime which was fascinating, albeit uneven in all its seasons.
I loved A French Village (about France under Nazi occupation). You can watch the first few seasons free on Prime and then the rest under a free trial to MHZ.

(6 posts)I have Netflix subscription and I've been watching Broadchurch and The fall lately. If you like gloomy but thrilling detective stories, you should check them out

People tend to back off foreign language shows but I would like to say that you get use to the subtitles very quickly. There are so many wonderful shows out there.
Here are some of my favorites:
Netflix:
Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Japan)
Deadwind (Finland)
Bordertown (Finland)
Rita (Denmark)
Occupied (Norway)
Hashoter Hatov (Israel)
You can also watch the first 3 seasons of Outlander, which is in English. An English woman in the 1940's "falls through time" and travels back to the 1700's in Scotland. It is great.
And of course, Grace and Frankle.
On Amazon:
Gourmet Makes
Downtown Abbey
Carnival Row
Unforgotten
You can also get a Sundance Now subscription through Amazon Prime. Sundance Now has some great programming. These are two I have been watching:
Stella Blomkvist (Iceland)
Discovery of Witches

(4,523 posts)we love the (sometimes sorta trashy) Spanish Netflix series. It must be a pretty small scene for actors over there because it's kinda fun to see your favorite actors again and again in different shows. Sooooo much better than US TV etc.
Las Chicas del Cable (Cable Girls)
Set in 1920's Spain, four young women begin working as phone operators at one of the world's first modern telecommunications companies.
Gran Hotel (Grand Hotel)
This popular period drama from Spain is now available on Netflix, and featuring a major mystery that involves both the owners and the servants at a 1900's aristocratic hotel.
Club de Cuervos (Club of Crows)
If you're in the mood for a dramedy that brings as many laughs as it does feels, Club de Cuervos will do the trick. Chava and Isabel are two siblings who inherit their father's soccer team after he unexpectedly dies, and their battle toward who gets to be the boss is full of the kind of drama that will keep novela-lovers on the edge of their seat every episode.
Velvet
The main storyline of the show is the love story of Alberto Márquez (played by Miguel Ángel Silvestre), heir of Galerías Velvet, one of the most prestigious fashion houses in the Spain of the late 1950s, and Ana Rivera (Paula Echevarría), who works as a seamstress there.
El Internado - (no longer on NetFlix)
The Boarding School), also known as El Internado Laguna Negra (The Black Lagoon Boarding School) is a Spanish television drama-thriller focusing on the students of a fictional boarding school in a forest far from the city, on the outskirts of which macabre events occur.
Morocco: Love in Times of War
In 1921, nurse trainees from Madrid's upper class open a hospital in Melilla for Rif War soldiers, finding friendship and romance while saving lives.
45 rpm (Spanish: 45 revoluciones)
is a 2019 Spanish drama television series created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira and starring Carlos Cuevas, Guiomar Puerta and Iván Marcos. The plot revolves around the establishment of a music label in the 1960s
The Time in Between
for a glamorous Spanish-language period drama that unfolds like an escapist novel. Adapted from María Dueñass best-selling novel, El Tiempo Entre Costuras, The Time in Between spans nearly a decade in the life of Sira Quiroga, a humble seamstress (played with wide-eyed vivacity by Adriana Ugarte) whose beauty and courage get her into and out of danger with equal frequency.
El ministerio del tiempo (English title: The Ministry of Time)
is a Spanish fantasy television series created by Javier and Pablo Olivares and produced by Onza Partners and Cliffhanger for Televisión Española. It premiered on 24 February 2015 on TVE's main channel La 1.[1] The series follows the exploits of a patrol of the fictional Ministry of Time, which deals with incidents caused by time travel.
And if you likes Stranger Things - the German language "DARK" is actually *(IMHO) better:
Dark is a German science fiction thriller web television series co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese.[5][6][7] Set in the town of Winden, Germany, Dark concerns the aftermath of a child's disappearance which exposes the secrets of, and hidden connections among, four estranged families as they slowly unravel a sinister time travel conspiracy which spans three generations. Throughout the series, Dark explores the existential implications of time and its effects upon human nature.
British:
Foyle's War
As WWII rages, DCS Foyle fights his own war on the home-front; investigating crime on the south coast of England. Later series, see the retired detective working as an MI5 agent in the aftermath of the war.
Australian Series:
The Doctor Blake Mysteries (also The Blake Mysteries)
is an Australian television series that premiered on ABC TV on 1 February 2013 at 8:30 pm.[1] The series stars Craig McLachlan in the lead role of Doctor Lucien Blake, who returns home to Ballarat, northwest of Melbourne, in the late 1950s to take over his late father's general medical practice and role as police surgeon after an absence of 30 years. Five series aired as of 2017, with a telemovie to close the program at the completion of the fifth season.
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
is an Australian drama television series. It was first broadcast on ABC on 24 February 2012. It is based on author Kerry Greenwood's historical mystery novels, and it was created by Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger. The series revolves around the personal and professional life of Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), a glamorous private detective in 1920s Melbourne.

(41,363 posts)I agree about Foyle's War, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. These are all wonderful series.

(4,523 posts)I love the actors/actresses - just amazing (yes beautiful) but they just seem come across warmer.
But then I hardly watch any US tv. It's all about 45 min of Nextfilx a night etc.
The Foyles War, Blake, Fisher is what got us turned on to Netflix series - then we ran out and branched into the Spanish series.
Theres' also Doc Martin and Father Brown (British I believe).
We really notice a lot of the "pace" is slower - w/o sacrificing anything, and allowing you to enjoy the overall show. The US shows are super annoying in the dialog, quick cuts, jumping around with no purpose, etc . Hard to believe they do it on purpose, but oh well. Its also interesting to see the difference in countries and how they seem to have less violence (and of course more sex!) - sure they have "murders" but not like our hyper fast paced, brutal, psycho loving, etc shows like CSI etc in the US. Cant STAND those shows.

(4,305 posts)Amazon Prime and I think first 3 series also on Netflix.
It is about guys who go out with metal detectors in the English countryside. I saw the synopsis and laughed and said, "Honey, want to watch the most boring show imaginable?" It is an absolute jewel. It's a slow start and then, there you are. I have watched it or recommended it to people aged 15-85. Every single person has thanked me.
MacKenzie Crook writes, directs, and stars in it. Diana Rigg is in it, and her daughter.
It is both funny and deep.
NOT TO OVERSELL OR ANYTHING!!!
